“Lovely fruit bread”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 8, 2012 via mobile

It tells you something about a place when people queue up to get a table. We have been several times and the food, service and price is always very good. They also have a bakery shop that they use to supply the goods for the cafe, so if you like something you can buy it, the fruit bread is very nice, so we bought a loaf. Very recommended.

“THE BEST TEA-ROOM IN CHESTER. IT IS AN ESSENTIAL PLACE TO VISIT!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 18, 2012

As soon as we arrive in Chester (we visit every year from (minging) Northern Ireland), we make a beeline for Chatwin's Tea Rooms (formerly known as Weinholt's). What can I say, I am 24, have been going to Chester since I was 4 (I adore the place), and have been visiting Chatwin's for many years. My mum and I have a tradition of an annual shopping trip to Chester in October / November / December, to browse the city's lovely cobbled streets, Rows and Roman walls, and generally chill-out and forget about horrible Northern Ireland. We always head to Chatwin's the morning we arrive. You enter on the ground floor, walking past the takeaway bakery counter, then heading up the stairs at the back of the shop. These lead to the first-floor tearoom, which is always busy, people sitting reading papers, or chatting away to each other quietly. The tearoom is cosy, warm, and so inviting. The smell of bakery produce is in the air, and if you can, you choose a window seat overlooking the delightful, bustling, cobbled Northgate Street. Chatwin's menu is mouthwatering, but I always choose the same thing..every year..their famous hot, buttered Doorstep Toast. So good. 2 slices of thick fresh bread, toasted. A choice of white, brown or seeded granary, covered in melting butter. With a pot of tea, you cannot beat it. I can never choose which option, so always go for 2!! The staff that work there are very pleasant, and we have come to recognise them over the years. We were there as a whole family in July, and my mum and I are heading back over in November, all being well, for a Christmas shopping break, so we will be hitting Chatwin's ASAP!!

“Original food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 17, 2012

Visited Chatwins today after reading these reviews. I like the ambiance, slightly old-fashioned but in a characterful way. The best part for me was the originality of some of the items: toasted fruit bread made in-house and potato cakes, ideal for the Head of Finance who doesn't like sweet snacks. The coffee was only one small cup, no cafetiere or top-ups, but that's a minor quibble.

“An old fashioned tea shop but well worth a visit in the 21st century!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 20, 2012

Everyone walking along Nothgate Street stops to admire the mouth-watering cakes on display in Chatwin's window but they may not be aware of the tea rooms above the cake shop.

For a welcome cup of tea or coffee after a hard days shopping then a visit to Chatwins will help you relax and unwind. It's like going back into the past with Strawberry teas, delicious toasted tea cakes or even a bowl of soup.

The extensive menu sells a selection of all those wonderful home baked cakes and savories that are sold downstairs.

You wil be greeted on arrival by Paula and her team and shown to a table. Do watch out for tables under the air conditioning units because it can be like sitting in a wind tunnel when they are switched onl

I can't think of a more pleasant place for a break from shopping. There are even newspapers to read!

“Great for a tasty treat”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2012

Stopped in here (Chester) by chance - a little old lady outside the door told us it was the best place in town (great marketing department!) so we went upstairs for coffee and cake. Service was excellent.
