I have stayed at the hotel before, when it was owned by Ramada Jarvis. The rooms are very tired, though it seems that an upgrade is currently being carried out. On both occasions, I stayed at this hotel, purely because it was the venue of a one week intensive course. On the whole, the staff are friendly and helpful - apart from the snotty blonde little madam on reception. The Seb Coe Health Club is more than adequate, with very friendly and helpful staff and provides a good way to wind down after a hard day of learning. Food was acceptable, though breakfast was the best meal of the day and truly healthy options were pretty scarce. The little things that niggle, are the lack of an enclosed wardrobe, or drawers. It is tough to live in a room for a week, without having to look at the contents of your bag hanging on a rack. The heating was incredibly noisy, unless it was up full belt, or turned off, which did not make for a restful sleep. The lack of laundry bag and hotel information in the room was a little annoying too. I did raise this with reception, and was given a laundry bag and form, but the hotel info was not forthcoming. I booked on Laterooms and got a decent rate - even though it was business travel, I like to get the best price. Would I pay my own money to stay here? No.

Dear HyacinthBucket64. Thank you for your recent review of the Mercure Chester East Hotel on Tripadvisor.com. I was pleased to read that your stay was acceptable and delighted to hear on the whole your positive comments about the team at the hotel. Due to the change in brand we are still waiting delivery of the new guest directory for the rooms, although there is a temporary one now in place. We have now launched the Mercure breakfast standard and you’ll be pleased to read that there is now porridge, local honey, fresh fish, and pro-biotic drinks as standard with a larger selection of fresh fruit and cereal. The new owners are keen to invest in their hotels and I hope that when you next visit you will see the benefit from this as we tackle many of the issues that you have highlighted. Yours Sincerely James Lake, General Manager
