“Roman history and Liverpool nearby”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 22, 2013

We wanted to visit Chester because of it's long history dating to before the Romans arrived and because we could day trip to Liverpool. The Bunkroom was a perfect location for this plan. It's located within easy walking distance from both the walled centre of Chester and the train station. Our room was a double with comfy bed, sink, and enough space to put bags and stuff. The shared bathroom was downstairs, a bit of a trek in the night. Perhaps the best feature was the shared kitchen. It was well equipped and clean with refrig and shelf space to keep our food. Our week in Chester passed quickly and we'd consider returning again.

Wow!!! I was a little dubious when booking The Bunkroom as it is a hostel but I would not hesitate to stay here again. We had a 6 bed dorm with an en suite. The room was a little small but considering it had three bunk beds in it, it wasn't too bad at all. The lady on reception who checked us in was lovely, polite and helpful. The lady shown us around and said if we need anything to just ask. There is a kitchen that you can use with free tea and coffee also cupboards and a fridge to store your items, there's a dining/eating area where you have your continental breakfast and off there is a TV, sofa area. There is also an outside seating, which is kind of hippy ish and it is so cosy with cushions and throws.(Fab idea)
We paid £126 for 6 people for bed and breakfast. It is in a perfect location just minutes from the town and train station. You have to pay£5 deposit for the key which you get back when you return the key. Overall fab!

I really enjoy staying at this hostel. The staff are friendly and kind! The breakfast is quite delicious! The living condition is comfort and clean. More importantly, the location is wonderful. It is both close to the city centre and the train station. I really would like to recommend this hostel to the other travellers!

Stayed here for fri and sat night for my sisters hen party and booked the whole house out for us all. From when we arrived Chris was brilliant, really helpful and friendly. The rooms and bathrooms were lovely and clean and we had great fun sleeping in bunk beds! Made use of the outdoor area which was great for us all to have a drink and chat together. Had a fab weekend and would definately stay here again.

1. It is not on their website but there is no-one there from 10.30am – 4.00pm
2. It is not on their sign on the door (which tells you the above) that you can call the booking number to get someone to let you in.

I think the first is dishonestly misleading (so you’ll book) and the second deliberately misleading (in the hope that you don’t disturbed them). Luckly I called to complain and they came round to let me in.

3. The shared toilet for rooms without en-suits is also the shower room. If someone is in the shower you can’t use the loo. (Doesn’t take many people to put this room out of use for a good while in the morning/evening)

4. The walls a very very thin. I could clearly here every conversation in the corridor/hall and whenever someone opened and shut their door, I thought it was someone coming into my room. I kept jumping and looked round to check even though I know my door was locked

On their own you’d put up with it, but all together made for an unpleasant stay.

On the + side the room was nice and warm. There was a nice atmosphere and the girl running the place was totally charming. This is not enough to overcome the above issues though. I will not be back.

P.s. No more than 2 people can use the kitchen at one time. Its tiny – Not an issue in my case but worth mentioning

I would defiantly recommend the hostel. The owner was extremely accommodating and nothing as too much trouble. The rooms, kitchen and dinning area were all well kept, clean and tidy. Overall a friendly, welcoming, clean hostel with a good location.
