“What a mix of scenery. Amazing day!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 14, 2014 NEW

Had planned to try and do all 34 miles of this in one day. We'd already done a long distance one of 29 miles so we knew it was possible. Sadly, an injured leg meant we called time on it after around 20 miles and (lucky, lucky, lucky) ended up at a superb pub in Burwardsley. From start to finish, the scenery was great and ever changing. From sandstone cliffs to woodland paths to vast forest trails and open fields to walking through the middle of a towering maize field to watching people navigate and canal lock and finally, two castles. Cracking day and made perfect by the weather. Heading back there soon to do the other 14 miles just to say we've done it all.

“Varied and beautiful scenery”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 6, 2014

We are beginners when it comes to walking. We'd been planning on doing the Sandstone Trail for ages and finally (with the guarantee of no rain) thought we'd go for it.
Being beginners we did just over half of the trail. Starting at the pillar in Frodsham, we walked to Burwardsley and stayed at the Pheasant Inn.
The walk is beautiful straightaway. The walk through Frodsham and its suburbs up to the hill was fantastic. There are incredible views from here.
There is an incredible array of scenary and terrain as you walk it.
We would really advise you do it.
Tips
Have a guide book. Sometimes it's not too clear if you were just to look out for the posts. Many of the signs are hidden behind overgrowth. It will also be good for telling you some interesting local information.
Plan where you will stop. The Summertrees cafe where we were planning on having a toilet stop and getting a cold drink was closed down. There are no facilities on the route itself (being a trail that follows a hill path, once it is out of Frodsham it does not go through any more towns or villages). This meant that we had to detour 20 minutes away from the trail to go to the Boot Inn (highly recommended). Stone House Farm in Manley, about 3 hours into the trail, is a B&B and also has a cafe. Didn't have time to stop there as we were already running late but it looked very pleasant.
Good footwear, obviously. Some rough ground.
Some of the paths are very, very overgrown. The circular routes seem to be more popular so some sections of the path that are not on these routes are very neglected. There were quite a few times we felt like we were hacking through the jungle like Victorian explorers. Nettles everywhere so long sleeves could be needed.

Lovely walks along the Sandstone Trail, which allow for you to visit many historical attractions en route.

“Amazing! Can't wait to walk further...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 9, 2014

We walked just a small section from Beeston Castle to Peckforton Castle. The views were amazing! We barely saw another soul. We stopped off on the top of a hill to have our picnic in the sun. Bliss. There was so much history around too, and the houses nearby were simply gorgeous-so jealous!! Will definitely go back to walk further next time.

“Beautiful views”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 1, 2014

We walked the section from Whitchurch to Bickerton Church. The scenery is very varied with canal, fields and sandstone ridges. The views from Bickerton Hill are amazing and it was a surprise to see the wild ponies grazing there.
