“Beautiful views”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 1, 2014

We walked the section from Whitchurch to Bickerton Church. The scenery is very varied with canal, fields and sandstone ridges. The views from Bickerton Hill are amazing and it was a surprise to see the wild ponies grazing there.

“A great walk for all types of walkers”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 15, 2014

Park at Candle Factory and start walk up country lanes, it's easy to follow. At the top of the hill carry on into woodland with clear pathways. Great views at the top. Easy walk down, pleasant scenery and relaxing walking back to country lanes to walk back to the Candle Factory. You need to go into the cafe with seating inside and outside which offer fantastic views over Cheshire. Great food, delicious ice cream and fabulous friendly staff who even offered water for the dogs. Had a great visit as we always do. Can't wait for our next visit.

“Cheshire at it's best”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 5, 2014

The Sandstone trail takes you through wonderful rural Cheshire scenery from Frodsham/Helsby all the way to Whitchurch - a tad over 30 miles. Hardened long distance walkers might attempt it in one go but it is better enjoyed in segments and there are many booklets of circular walks, so that parts of it can be walked and savoured like a string of pearls. If walked as a long distance path, then it is best walked from the Mersey southward as then the sun (if it deigns to come out) will warm your face all day.
The Sandstone Trail may not be mountainous but it's certainly not level as the route follows it's namesake - the sandstone outcrop which marches across the otherwise pretty flat Cheshire plain. There are some steep though mercifully short climbs. My favourite part follows the ridge past Raw Head on Bickerton Hill. Here at times the ridge is so narrow that on the higher parts you can see all around you and for miles in every direction.
Early Spring is probably the best time of year to enjoy the walk as trees along the ridge are mainly deciduous so will afford a better view when their branches are bare. There is really nothing not to love about this walk. The countryside is beautiful, wildlife is plentiful and the views are glorious and ever changing.
pretty large chunks are single file only though, so not recommended for honeymoon walking!

“Great walk”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 23, 2014

The trail is beautiful and well worth walking even if you just do parts at a time. We live by the trail so are fortunate to walk on this every day of the week. Whitchurch is truly beautiful so great to start your walks there.
