I have just had the best birthday party ever at the Doubletree. Having one of those milestone birthdays is daunting enough but the staff all made it go perfectly.
We booked the Ballroom and Conservatory for 70 people, having a buffet and a disco - just the usual thing. Many of my guests booked rooms as the new Spa was due to open on the 2nd Nov and my party was the 7th. Despite my worries, the Spa opened on time and was all sparkly and new - just as Jemma our events co-ordinator had said. All the events staff were brilliant - Claire just seemed to know my questions before I asked them. Jess and Bev were brilliant too. Laura in reservations was a star getting all my variously sized families and friends into appropriate rooms. My only tiny gripe was that if you rang out of hours you got the nice American answering service, who tried but were hopeless. Only ring 9 - 5 and not at weekends!
On the day of the party we were assigned Rob who just about did everything - sorting tables and chairs, moving dance floors, tidying up and vaccuuming the room. We just dressed the tables as we wanted them and they even helped with that. Jane, who was looking after us for the evening was brilliant. I need a Jane at home! She anticipated everything before I knew I needed it! Jane got me drinks, arranged extra chairs for late guests, co-ordinated people to the buffet, repaired a guests dress, had all my gifts sent to the room, kept me calm when a bus load of guests were delayed nearly an hour. All this whilst being very professional in the face of two spoof waiters, who we had hired for the evening, who were being very professionally unprofessional! Spoof canapes of carrot, jelly bean and a hoola hoop were going down very strangely with our guests whilst they helped our spoof waitress find her contact lens on the floor, but Jane was so worried about the hotels reputation (they do a big disclaimer song at the end but most people had sussed them by then).
Buffet was brilliant with various sandwiches and wraps (not your normal ones, much thicker and nicer fillings) and on the hot table, mini fish and chips (lovely), chilli king prawns (delicious) mini steak pies (mmmm) quiches (tasty) and lots of other food that I unfortunately didn't get to try but my guests loved it all. It was all replenished quickly so no-one had to wait and it all tasted fresh.
We pushed the boat out and had the Presidential Suite which was lovely. Had a few friends for drinks before kick-off which was nice but the room soon fills up as its not huge. Double shower was very impressive though and the beds were incredibly comfortable. Linens and towels all excellent quality.
On the whole, I had a fabulous weekend and I think my guests, both those who stayed and those who visited enjoyed the evening and I think that was down the the meticulous staff. My sister and her husband were the only ones who had a problem in that the electric went off in their room in the morning but this can happen anywhere and the staff did their best to get it sorted.
I would recommend this hotel to anyone who is planning a birthday or wedding or any kind of celebration. I know I want to have a party there every year (not sure my husband will agree to that though!)
