4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 14, 2009

I had booked this trip for me and my husband for our first wedding anniversary, and when i read all the reviews on here i really wasn't looking forward to this trip. But when we got there it was brilliant!!!! There had been a mix up with our reservation which was best westerns fault but Tom the receptionist sorted this out for us and the manager gave us free b'fast because of this mix up. When we got up to the room that we had been upgraded to it was beautiful and there was a little cake and card from the manager had left for us. Later that night we ate in the restaurant, it was beautiful, they had gave us a comp bottle of champagne and had put heart confetti on the table. And the food was fantastic. This is a lovely 3* hotel but the staff are deftly 5*! We will be going again!

We booked the hotel through the Best Western site, a little bit of confusion on the rate, both at check in and check out, but no problems there.

The hotel has a pleasant enough feel about it on arrival, but annoying to have a wide screen television right behind the receptionist, so it is impossible to pay attention to the receptionist because of what is happening on the television behind.

Our room was on the first floor, in a 60's or 70's extension to the hotel. The window opened onto an interior yard, with nothing other than other rooms to look at. As it was hot, all the bedrooms had their windows open, so sounds from other rooms were obvious, at all times day and night.

The hotel is close to the station and opposite the Best Western Queen Hotel. If you are lucky, you can park in the Queen Hotel's car park under an arrangement, (£8 per night)there is a small gate opposite so it might be possible to be let in to the car park, but if the jobsworth repectionist is on duty at the Queen, that otpion won't be open to you and you will have to walk round the hotel to get in. there are some pay and display car parks around as well, which might be cheaper. (Station is £4.20 and due to go up, and you need to be quite alert to use the machine as it needs your car registration number)

Getting into the city centre is a 10 minute walk away, but you can use the free bus from the railway station up to 7 pm at night., (technically you need a railway ticket). Chester clearly has a lively nightlife scene, and while it would be safe for most tourists, you would want to be a bit aware on Friday nights when the lads are out in force. It was fascinating to see so many young people dressed (or nearly udnressed) for a wild night out. We walked back the long way to avoid the subway under the big roundabout, which was not pleasant in daylight.

The hotel bar is quiet, domianted by another big screen tv. Plenty of locals sem to have parties and dinners in the hotel, so the food is good. Breakfast was nicely served, it will be a success when hotels can serve smoked bacon, and there wasn't any honey or marmite for the toast. But there was good service of tea (in a tea pot!) so there could not really be any complaints. The staff are friendly, polite and very welcoming without being fussy, so full marks on that point.

The bedroom was a little dark. two single beds pushed together, which didn't leave too much room. Not the softest of beds. Bathroom was clean and ok. Lighting was sub standard, but wifi worked on day two. Structurally, the hotel's floorboards need fixing. every movement made upstairs could be heard in our room, and there must be something in the water in Chester, because there were plenty of movements. The accompanying sound effects were heard by all around, and when the earth moved for the third time you could hear the laughter from the other neighbours through the open windows. Try explaining that to the kids.

Overnight stay for a friends 40th - close to station and centre of Chester only 10 mins walk so hotel location farly quiet. Parking has to be paid for seperately. Very good breakfast and staff were helpful. Hotel decor was fair although perhaps looking a bit dated. Room quite small and pretty dusty but bathroom clean. Like most hotels suffers from corridor and adjoining noise. Also popular for noisey groups !

We had read all the reviews and wanted to put some reviews right.
We checked in and they were friendly and approachable. The room was basic but very clean and had everything in that we needed.
The breakfast was one of the best we have had and we have travelled in Britain a lot and it was hot, plentiful, and well cooked. All the staff were friendly and attentive, pleanty of fresh hot, tea and coffee and toast, hot.
We got on the train to Liverpool for £2.90 return and we had a day in Chester we would recommend to anyone.

We found a well appointed hotel with friendly professional staff. The bedroom was excellent and everything was in first class working order. The shower was one of the best we have encountered on our many travels around the country.Obviously everybody has different views regarding decor at any hotel but who cares as long as your stay is enjoyable. We shall return to this great city and top rate hotel in the future

PS The local Wetherspoons was excellent as well but then again arent they all!
