“An excellent pub”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 6, 2014

The Red lion is a classic English pub. It serves real ale to a high standard, has a good menu with reasonable prices. The food is uncomplicated and cooked really well. If you are coming to Chester and want a safe pair of hands for a meal and a pint, this is an excellent pub to choose.

“Xmas eve debacle”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2014

After reading the reviews we thought we'd give here a try for our annual Xmas eve family meal. As we'd never been here before we didn't know the pub layout so were a bit disappointed that our table was in the main area and with being Xmas eve the pub was packed and noisy (not their fault). The menu was simple but appealing and they did children's portions of the adult meals. My daughter wanted the haddock but we were told they were out of this, so three of us chose the steak especially as it came with three way cooked chips. Unfortunately although the steak was nice but there was no Diane sauce (the waitress didn't even know what this was despite it being advertised on the menu) and two of us had to have 'normal chips'. When the food arrived there were no field mushrooms on the plates and after asking were told there were no mushrooms left either. At the end of the meal (about 7.10) we asked to order puddings (I really fancied the brûlée) but we're told the chef had left. This won't have bothered us as much if we had been told at the start that we had to order puddings or if when we'd booked we had been advised of this and maybe been told to come a bit earlier.
I was really looking forward to this meal but we were all left deflated. My husband was going to complAin but with it being so busy didn't think it was the appropriate time to do so. He did also go back in a couple of days later but the landlord was not available.

“Spot on! Traditional pub, great beer, good food and a proper Landlord”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 12, 2013

Just a short walk over the Dee, the Red Lion really is a proper pub with an eclectic clientele, good range of beers, excellent food, and .....it's dog friendly.
Most pubs these days have a manager that seems to be in the background. Not here, the Landlord is friendly and proactive and seems to know everybody's name, quite refreshing!
Well worth a visit.

“Saturday morning breakfast”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2013

Did these for the rugby during the Lions test matches. Carried them on for the Saturdays and they are an absolute treat. Sunday dinners are spot on too. It may be out from the middle of Handbridge but trust me, the two minute walk is well worth it.
