It was good that under fives were free but as a secondary school history teacher I found the experience empty and uninformative. The displays were very poorly lit and the interiors dark and foreboding leading to my 4.5 year old to be frightened. The displays of artifacts were dull and uninteresting ie broken pottery and the 'archaeological digs' pretty poor ie three areas of stone foundations didn't tell us anything apart from the fact that children are unimpressed by viewing stones foundations. the upstairs interactive area was its saving grace with costumes and a few Roman activities to try. We were the only ones in and i found it bizarre that as we came into the gift shop nobody was there. The exit is also odd. A fire door from the gift shop unceremoniously dumps you onto the street .
