“Smart modern hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 1, 2013 via mobile

Centrally located for a stay in Chester and right next to the racecourse. We had a great welcome and the room was clean, spacious and comfortable. The hotel is typically modern with a rather cold feeling main bar which feels like it wants to also cater for the Saturday night out crowd, however the bar prices probably preclude that. We much preferred the feel of the restaurants champagne bar, which gave a superb view of the surrounding area but oddly had less comfortable chairs than downstairs. Of note are the staff there who will mix you just about any cocktail. On the whole well worth a visit but don't expect it to be cheap.

As others have said - entry to the car park is similar to the krypton factor.

Checking in was a bit bizarre - the female who attended to us had such a strong European accent that I could hardly understand her.
When she asked if we wanted to eat there that evening we obviously said yes; we were looking forward to eating at the Michael Cain restaurant. We booked a table for 8.

The penny dropped when she said the restaurant was on the 1st floor! Michaels restaurant is on the 5th floor! - When my girlfriend checked, they confirmed that there was no table available in the Michael Cain restaurant so they booked us into the other restaurant! - Sneaky - good job we checked. We cancelled that night and booked for the following night in the correct restaurant. Watch out for that one if you stay and eat here.

Took the lift to our room. I've stayed at plenty of hotels all over the world and despite us paying for a "superior" room, this was just like any other business hotel room. Clean, basic, practical, but not luxurious in any way.
The blurb on the website said "superior" rooms had either a bath or a balcony. There was no bath in ours so pulling the curtains aside we were pleased to see a balcony (slightly bigger than a Juliette and with just 1 chair!) However, the tilt and slide door would not open. It had clearly caused problems for previous guests as it was hanging on by its rivets.

On the way out for our evening meal we explained to reception that the balcony door handle was broken and we could not open it to get onto the balcony - they said they would get someone to look at it.

Had a lovely evening out in Chester (see other reviews).
Back to the hotel. The balcony door handle had been secured on properly - but still would not open! Whats the point in having a balcony if you can not actually go out and stand on it.

Tea tray in the wardrobe had a good selection of teas and coffees; and the biscuits were nice.
But the quality of the hotel is nowhere near the standard of the Michael Cain restaurant that it shares the building with.

Plus point - My girlfriend loved the carpet and the side lights

Room Tip: Room 105 - near to the Spa and Gym. Balcony door doesn't open. View is of main road outside fron...

Dear GazBouch

I am sorry for the confusion you encountered with our reception but I see you also left a review of the Michael Caines Restaurant which I can read you enjoyed. We aim to welcome all our resident in the Michael Caines restaurant and close out booking on only rare occasion.

Our Desirable rooms (superior) offer a slightly larger floor space than the Comfortable (standard room type) or a balcony with a view of the race course. Next time you would like to come and stay with us, please let me know and I will organise a complementary upgrade for you.

I look forward to hear from you

Yours Sincerely

Christophe

Just spent two nights at the Abode Chester and have had a fantastic experience. Parking is under the hotel in a secure car park with easy access. The reception staff were really helpful, and explained everything very carefully and helped us book dinner in the Michael Caine Restaurant. The first night we ate in the Grill Bar downstairs where the food and service was excellent. The second night we ate in the restaurant on the fifth floor, everything was very professional and Craig the restaurant manager took the time to explain everything to us, we decided on the Graze menu which gives you a chance to sample the meals on the main menu, but smaller half portions, what a brilliant idea this was. Instead of having to decide what I wanted my husband and I sampled 6 different courses, each one described and explained well by Keats our waiter. The food can only be described as amazing, thank you Tom. Martina helped us chose the wines that would go well with these courses, and she was spot on with her advice. The breakfast on both mornings was lovely well cooked and beautifully presented. Thank you so much for a wonderful stay, we will be back x x x

The restaurant is modern, on trend and has a wonderful view of Chester. Each course crafted into art and very tasty. 3 course early bird is just enough and a pleasure. The staff are well trained and attentive. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a pleasant evening.

Spent one night in the hotel for Chester races. Location was perfect about a 5 minute walk from the course, staff were extremely polite and helpful clearly a lot of time is spent on proper training. On site parking excellent.
Room very modern and bright complete with a balcony and breakfast absolutely spot on.
Perhaps a little pricey but it was races day so I wouldn't expect anything else for this quality of accommodation.
Would definitely use the this hotel again.

We had a very relaxing one night stay at Abode this weekend. It was well worth requesting a view of the race course. We had a "desirable room" with huge windows looking straight across the race course to the hills. The room was great. The biggest and most comfortable bed I have ever stayed in. Shame we didn't have a bath, but for one night a shower was fine.

The decor in the bar was a little strange, (and maybe a bit tacky?), but we found all the staff very friendly. My husband had a hot stones massage, which he said he would definitely recommend.

The only reason I haven't given 5 stars is that the hotel overall maybe lacks a little wow factor or soul, but there were very few faults to this hotel.

Room Tip: Go for a Desirable room. Request race course side, or there are some rooms with balconies if thats w...

Booked a desirable room last minute through trivago for a one night stay. Arrived just before check in at 2pm it was a quick easy process and we were allocated a room on 3rd floor overlooking racecourse as requested. Although they did take £50 deposit off my debit card that I was not aware of until we checked in, this was refunded when we checked out -£10 car parking fee. Our room was spacious, clean, had a huge bed and massive windows overlooking racecourse. Cannot comment on food as did not have breakfast included in price and thought it was expensive there are plenty of eating places 5 minutes walk away that are much better value. Would stay here again and recommend to family and friends.
