“Wonderful Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 1, 2011

My partner treated me to a night at Stocks hotel last weekend and it is by far the best place to stay in the Channel Isles! The wonderful friendly staff make us feel so relexed and nothing was too much trouble. The hotel is beautiful after the refurbishment, but for us the best part was the food! We both had the Sark scallops to start best we have ever tasted followed by the Lamb just heaven on a plate! Well done and keep up the GREAT work

If you are going to charge £20 for half lobster and chips, perhaps the lobster should be more than 2 and half mouthfuls.
If you compare it to a starter portion at Da Nellos, St Peter Port, of lobster Linguine for £10.50, it just emphasises the rip off factor. Sure Sark is unique no cars, now white noise, truly special, and so is Stocks a beuatiful renovated new hotel. However, does the special dining room need to be cleared out when people are having lunch? and the quad bike making plenty of noise pulling the trailer??
anyway geting back to the over priced menu...ok i complained to the maitre d' about 'value for money' and he said but it it is half a lobster......eh half a lobster is not half a loster tail.....oh yes i see he said......what about the claws, that's usually included in half a loster is nt it? So I thought, and the manager chap went and got me some HUGE and very hot lobster claws.....they had nt finished cooking in the pot, the flesh was like jelly....OH OH....where do i go now - order the £13 burger, nope I'll go for the chesseboard, I have had a cheeseboard before, and it was very good, with melted camembert, so i thought - lets do that - make up for the major dissapointment of my 'lobbo' experience. 4 cheese selection that had all just come straight out of the fridge...and were nearer frozen than edible,,,,they soon found their flavour.........positives - sure the sancerre at £24.95 was good although it said on the wine list it was 2008 and it was a 2010...
Oh and the final nail in the disspointed coffin - £30 for a sea breem - sure it was a 'special' but £30 is just a little toppy..... all in all can i just say if you are going to go for high end pricing structure, you need to nail everything from start to finish...Wont be rushing back.....and to add insult to injury the 'girls' went to La Monerie, and have nt stopped raving about it. Good luck, because you do have a lovely spot, and it's done out well, but u cant rip people off if they are not getting what they are paying for.

We are disappointed to read this review about the newly renovated and refurbished Stocks Hotel in Sark. Throughout this, our first summer after re-opening, we have received many positive reviews from guests who have enjoyed their experience of the new look hotel, and the restaurant and Bistro menus. Indeed, a number have been posted on this website.
We continue to source an excellent variety of fresh premium produce from local fishermen and farmers. We endeavour to cook and present our food in the most simple and straightforward style whilst retaining good, honest, natural flavours.
Our Maitre d'Hotel and his small team of staff have been praised for their customer care and attention, and for resolving any service issues as swiftly and effectively as possible.

I had chosen this hotel for a long weekend and am so happy I did. Our room was well appointed, clean and bright. All the staff were helpful and knowledgeable. The food in the main restaurant and bistro was excellent with a good choice and well presented. Breakfast had everything you could need and staff in both restaurants were very good. It was quiet as we were there towards the end of the season, however this did not detract from the atmosphere or attentiveness of staff. There was a lounge and library were you could relax in comfort out of your room or suite if the weather dictated staying indoors. There is a bay nearby that was easy to reach via a woodland walk as well as Little Sark being within strolling distance. I did not use the Spa so cannot comment on this aspect.
I would highly recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: We had a suite (303) which was roomy and well appointed. this suite does overlook the main path from...

My wife and I treated two of our daughters and their other half's to a family break. We live in Jersey and really enjoy our occasional trips to Sark. Some years ago we checked-out Stocks and found the hotel and its surroundings quite dark. However, it recently underwent a complete refurbishment. The rooms are beautifully decorated and furnished, the dining room and brasserie are bright and airy, the food excellent, the staff utterly charming: in short the prefect place for a weekend break.
I would give it five stars but the swimming pool is too small/short and should have some solar heating and night cover.

Room Tip: Second floor room at the front that has a free-standing bath in the bathroom.

I cannot fault any aspect of our stay- the extensive redevelopment of Stocks was obviously undertaken with a great deal of care with no expense spared. The rooms are stylishly furnished with warm oak and very comfortable beds. The new poolside bistro (and new pool itself) was a wonderful place to relax in the sunshine. The standard of the food was superb with service to match.
Although the hotel has improved immeasurably since we last stayed 10 years ago, it has not lost its unique charm and personality. We have stayed at other Sark hotels but Stocks is in a different league now!

We had a family room which included the children having their own room off the main room with bunk beds & their own TV. The whole hotel is clean & modern, the staff were friendly & the food was excellent, will be back.

Having regularly holidayed in Sark for 35 years, I am well-used to some of this wonderful island's eccentricities and quirks. My first holiday in 1975 to a guest house on the island saw the mirth-inducing sign by the loo: "Please only flush if absolutely necessary." Water is a precious resource on the island. Therefore, I have never regarded Sark as a typical "luxury" destination. We booked Stocks for our main holiday this year and I confess to have been slightly suspicious of the huge renovation work that has taken place over the last 18 months. Was it still going to be "Sark" or was it going to be an anonymous, characterless experience with bored-looking staff and overly-demanding urban guests.

Quite simply, the hotel was outstanding. The renovations have been done with a great eye for detail and very sympathetically. It defines evolution and not revolution. Brilliant. job. The family suite we booked had a comfortable bed, spacious sitting room area, an excellent shower and decent size bathroom, plenty of storage space, and good lighting for Mrs H's make-up routine. It was decorated simply and tastefully in a modern style but without being over designed or out of character.

We booked B&B terms as we wanted the flexibility to eat out if the food was uninspiring. We should have booked half board as the food was very good indeed. The breakfasts were delicious and certainly the best scrambled eggs and black pudding I have eaten. We then alternated between the Bistro and Restaurant for evening meals and loved the variety of fresh local produce and fish that was on offer - creatively put together, superbly cooked and elegantly served. A good quality children's menu too and the grown-up menu could also be adapted for children. Our daughter is 8 and she ate well from all of the menus.

The service was bang on - naturally friendly, professional, caring and patient but not obsequious or too "perfect." Very child-friendly but without making adults feel they were holidaying in a kindergarten.

In summary, we were thrilled and will definitely stay again. Any areas to build on? Maybe be a little bolder on the wine list. I would have happily ventured above £50 a bottle for something interesting. Paul - if you need some help, I'd gladly give you some free advice in return for some black pudding!
