“Lovely break.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 10, 2013

We have recently spent three nights at the Harbour Lights Hotel in Alderney. We enjoyed our stay very much; the room was comfortable and quiet, and the food was good, particularly the cooked breakfasts. Alderney is a beautiful island and the hotel is situated in a good position to walk more or less anywhere. However, aAs St Anne is up a fairly steep hill it might be more realistic to allow a walk of 15 minutes, rather than ten, unless you are young and very energetic!

Room Tip: We were in a room on the first floor overlooking the terrace at the back, not far from the restauran...

Very friendly from arrival to departure. Food was superb and they even produced two dishes on request. The manager/owner? Steve was most pleasant and helpful to all my questions about Alderney.. The trip was an Odyssey, my last stay was in 1937, searching for my school etc.
The rooms were fully fitted with all modern comms , WiFi and good selection of Wines and Beers.
I can thoroughly recommend to all including young families
It is a short walk down to Braye beach. There are 4 terraces on theback of the Hotel and a panoramic view over the hotel of Braye Bay, harbour ,breakwater anf Fort Albert

Room Tip: Rooms on the north side overlook Braye Bay

A very reasonably priced owner run hotel. We were a group of four arriving for by boat without sleeping accommodation. This hotel was perfect occupying a quiet location and being within a 10 minute walk from Braye harbour. In recent years the place has been completely refurbished so everything is modern and also spotlessly clean.

We were only in Alderney for two nights and had previously made other arrangements to eat out in the evenings. Judging by the breakfasts we enjoyed however I'm sure all the food is first class. Certainly other guests we spoke to there were very complimentary.

There is a friendly little bar in the corner of the dining room which always seems to be open serving reasonably priced drinks.

Staff were all extremely helpful to the extent where the proprietor followed us down to the harbour on departure to return a camera that one of our number had left in their room.

I can't think of anything negative to report except to say I rarely write reviews; in fact this is only second time I have, the other was for an oak floor we had laid down a year or so ago!

Room Tip: Rooms with sea views available; we were not bothered travelling around as we were by boat.

Dear Malcolm,
Thank you so much for taking the trouble to write a review - I will have to return more cameras to guests! I know your party had a great time on Alderney which included hiring bicycles from us and cycling around the island. You confirmed you would all return so you will be able to sample more cuisine from our great chef as featured this month in BFM Magazine as well as Food and Travel Magazine. Thanks again and I hope to see you all again soon.

The Harbour Lights hotel is well located close to Braye Bay, Harbour and a short to town. The room was clean & comfortable. Breakfast was great. The manager Steve was very helpful, he arranged transport the airport. Great value for money hotel.

Harbour Lights is probably best described as a restaurant with rooms and as a restaurant/ bistro it offers meals of a consistently high standard. We had a ground floor room which would have slept 4 people and obviously we did not expect any sort of view. However what was disappointing was that there was nowhere to sit in the room - other than on a bed. There is a small (very small) residents lounge featuring a couple of settees, wall mounted TV, table untidily piled high with a selection of old magazines and papers and the star attraction - 3 or 4 bicycles pushed against the wall under the TV. All rather strange! (And not conducive to relaxing)

We had three breakfasts and two dinners during our short stay and in this respect everything was fine. In good weather you could sit out at the back of the hotel which has a series of rising terraces where you could have a drink and a meal and if you struggle up to the very top level get a very good sea view. Despite its name Harbour Lights is not all that near the harbour and I was a little bit disappointed with the location as it was not all that close to downtown St Anne either . This may be OK for the hearty walkers who were patronising the hotel at the time of our visit but for the less agile not so good. Fortunately we hired a car (from Braye Cars -recommended) which we were able to park easily outside the hotel. From the accounts of other reviewers we might have been better off with an upstairs room although as they would be over the ground floor public rooms they might be noisy. Our room was thankfully quiet.

So on balance the quality of the restaurant/ bistro compensated for a bit of disappointment with room 2 (the Gannet suite).

Thank you for your review. I regret that none of our suites have armchairs in the bedrooms though it is only fair for me to point out to readers that the Gannet suite has a large drop sided table and two dinning chairs so one can write postcards, do a crossword, use Wi-Fi, drink complimentary tea or coffee, watch the TV etc in the bedroom. Apart from the lounge which also contains books, coffee table and table with chairs which are often used by those using Wi-Fi, there are three sofas in the bar area which also features a 42" TV. I am sorry you were disappointed with the location of the hotel as with your hire car you were only 2 minutes drive to the heart of St Anne or beautiful Braye Beach. Most guests are able to walk to St Anne's in 10 minutes or to the beach in 5 minutes. I appreciate the less able might have to struggle to get to the top two terraces which have a seaview but there is a terrace at ground floor level immediately outside the Bistro and Bar which even a wheelchair user can enjoy. Thank you again for what is a good review and I would add that our upper terrace is now replanted and redesigned and offers even more reward and incentive to see it.

What can I say?............Excellent should cover it.
Friendly staff, delicious food, lovely clean room, beautifully appointed, with large power shower. The perfect base to return to each evening to relax with friends and enjoy a nice meal. I stupidly left my passport in my room and Steve very kindly found it and posted it to me without delay (having returned to south coast by boat), great service!
I look forward to the next visit.

Room Tip: Nicer views to the front of the hotel

I spent 4 nights at the Harbour Lights in Alderney, A good clean hotel and only a 5 minute walk either to the harbour or the centre of St Anne. Dining in the hotel was good and reasonably priced, Breakfast was brilliant and very large portions. Steve the owner helped make this a great stay and i will definately be back.
