“Fab for whole family”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2013 via mobile

A regular haunt for us with kids, dogs, bikes ... not to mention wellies ...!

Pond dipping, hide making, camouflage face painting. Lots to do - but they could do more.

Worth a visit.

“Dragonflies galore”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 5, 2013

Wicken Fen is an old nature reserve that has recently been brought up to date with the addition of a boardwalk, whch runs for around 3/4 of a mile through the reedbeds. This boardwalk is perfect for viewing myriads of butterflies and dragonflies on a sunny summer's day, while on a wet day it means that you needn't get muddy feet! Naturally, although Wicken Fen is famed for its dragonflies, you won't see them all the year round, but there is still plenty to see. There are birds and wild flowers, a nature trail to follow, various hides overlooking feeders and ponds, and there also activities for children, such as pond dipping. I was particularly impressed by the small notices along the boardwalk pointing out the various plants and dragonflies to look out for in the vicinity. The reed beds are mesmerising, they stretch into the distance, and there is an old, furnished fenland cottage that you can explore. There are plenty of seats dotted around the paths and boadwalk, and a small cafe where you can get a drink and snacks. It is a very beautiful place.

“Wet Land in the Flat Lands”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 5, 2013

The National Trust has done well to preserve this area, and help us understand what the Fens once were. Enjoyed the boardwalk, we ded the nature trail last time we visited.

Like any nature reserve, its flora and fauna are different depending on the time of year you visit, but we saw many dragonflies, damsel flies, plans, birds etc.

Also did the boat trip which was very informative (although not sure the bull goring story makes family listening ;-) ).

Got a couple of bites (i attract anything that bites as being a victim of lyme disease from another NT property proves). Couple of mosquito bites not unusual in an area where there is lots of slow and stagnant water like here.

We'll be back again when in the area - such a treasure trove

“Flat but not Boring!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2013

Located in the heart of the Fens this National Trust owned reserve has a lot to offer both young & old.
There are excellent trails to walk, Hides to observe the birds,a Butterfly area & a Dragonfly zone. Acwessable in the main via a Boardwalk which accomadates wheelchairs.
With each season the characteristics of the Reserve change too-but there is always something interesting that will catch the eye-you will never get bored if you keep your eyes & ears open.

“interesting, fun place for all the family”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2013

We have been to Wicken Fen in all weathers at different times of the year and always have a good time. This National Trust nature reserve is brilliant for kids as there are always activities for them to take part in. The boardwalk is a perfect circular walk as it is not too long and is fully accessible for pushchairs, there are wildlife hides along the route. Pick up a free activity sheet from the shop; the kids can have fun finding the animal/bird rubbings along the way. Check on the website for the regular activities such as pond dipping they run and Father Christmas is well worth a visit in December - truly magical! They have a small cafe on site with limited indoor and outdoor seating, we generally take a picnic as the cafe can get crowded at busier times. We will definitely be visiting once or twice during the Summer holidays!
