“Fabulous breakfast”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 12, 2013 via mobile

Called in here for 10am breakfast at the beginning of our 150 mile trip back to the Isle of Wight via Southampton. Lovely full English breakfast at £6.50 including a large pot of tea (about 4 times bigger than what a very poor Little Chef offered us two days before for £1 more!). Also had fish and chips here the previous evening - large portion of haddock and good batter, fair value for money. Friendly staff - only two complaints were no hot water for hand washing in disabled toilets (? In the Others too) and the food was served on cold plates, however we will definitely call here for breakfast when we visit our relatives in the area again.

“Lazy Chef!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed March 11, 2013

We called in to have an impromtu lunch on the way to Cambridge at the Lazy Otter. Firstly we had a long wait - about 40 minutes and secondly the staff looked fed up and were not at all welcoming.

When our meal finally arrived I was very disappointed - I was eagerly awaiting smoked haddock and poached egg with new potatoes and vegetables. The haddock was thin and curled up at the ends where it had been decimated and the flesh was a dirty grey and the outer a geeny grey yellow! The vegetables were tastless and overcooked and the poached egg was flat and solid ( looked like it had been cooked in cling film!)

My husbands steak looked ok but was tasteless and he had 2 mushrooms and a tiny ramekin of frozen chips!

I sent back my meal and asked for a rustic roll filled with crayfish and smoked salmon as we had little time left. The roll arrived and was stale and the crusty outside was soft. The crayfish was smothered in a thick mayonnaise dressing - yuck.

This insult of a meal cost us £30. We live on the North Norfolk .coast, where eating out is a pleasure and for £30 we can have a lovely lunch!

Never again - they should change the name from the Lazy Otter to the Lazy Chef!!!!

“Terrible food”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 3, 2013 via mobile

We went for Sunday roast. My beef was overlooked, the veg was cooked well but tasteless and the whole plate had been submerged in tasteless gravy. The Yorkshire pudding was burnt to a crisp - I complained and the waitress agreed it looked burnt and went to get me a new one. It came exactly the same- overlooked and dry. She again agreed with me and went off to discuss with the chef. They offered us a free dessert which we declined as we wanted out of there. Carpets were so dirty the pattern had disappeared. Dirty tea cloths were hanging over the high chairs drying- unacceptable in front of house. Overpriced for what you get. We shall not be returning.

“What pub food should be”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 1, 2013

Made my first visit to this restaurant and hope I get the opportunity to return.
The food is a good selection of British favoiurites pushing towards gourmet food.
The quality I found to be very good and some of the starters seemed far to large - baked brie being a full sized brie!
Service was pleasant and friendly but could really do with another member of staff as when the place fills up it is hard to get anyone's attention - paying the bill being the most difficult!
The pub itself serves a good range of beers and is a well presented old village pub.
So great surroundings, good food and friendly relaxed service - great for an evening out.
