“Make your own dish”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 16, 2013

My husband really enjoyed the buffet where you have meat coming until you're unable to eat anymore. It was pricey though, I wouldn't pay that much if not for my husband. I guess it's good for people who love lots of meat. The bad part is even though it's a buffet they don't include sides like lettuce, onions or whatever else you want with your meat.

“perfectly good Japanese cafe”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 20, 2013

I asked if the sushi was fresh and was told it was and it tasted just fine. Maybe Yo Sushi and Yaki Tori are building demand for sushi in Cambridge and Genki is responding away from the city cente. If so good I hope it survives and keeps its standards. The tempura was also high class: light and tasty. By contrast the Maki seemed heavy with an industrial grade nori. There's an amazing choice of sake but I was content with Asahi super dry. The choice of wines by the glass is disappointing.

“The Genki Restaurant is now at this site - the J seems to have moved”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 5, 2013

We had arranged to meet at J Restaurant. Once over the surprise we had a pleasant evening. Endless supplies of Japanese Green Tea went well with both Chinese and Japanese dishes.

The Cantonese Roast Duck was superb - moist and tender, totally different from Peking style.

The Japanese fried rice with seafood was quite an adventure, with seafood you wouldn't be served around the Mediterranean, but delicious once you got past the shock.

Not being a judge of Japanese dishes, I can't give it a five, but so long as you heed the seafood description above I don't think you will be disappointed.

Well not unless you really wanted to find the J Restaurant anyway.

“Good food but not authentic Japanese.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 13, 2013

First thing, the restaurant at this address is no longer called J, it is now called Genki which means healthy in Japanese. Second, it is not a Japanese restaurant. If you are looking for traditional Japanese food then this is not the place. If you keep an open mind and accept the food for what it is, then the food is very nice albeit a bit expensive. Some of the food is traditional, whereas the rest is best described as Japanese style with Chinese influence. None of the staff were Japanese on the night I visited. The menu is in fact printed in Chinese and English. I can read enough Japanese (kanji, hiragana and katakana) to know the difference. Having said that, the food was fairly good if not fairly pricey compared with the same quality in Japan. My colleague and shared starters of sweet potato tempura (and it was true tempura), agedashi tofu (braised tofu) a typical Japanese pub dish, and vegetable gyoza which were more jiaozi style. My colleague’s main of yasai kare (vegetable curry) apparently tasted as good as looked but was not Japanese. My main was unagidon (braised eel of rice). It tasted just like eel but it wasn’t. Eel fillets are long and straight whereas my fish was tapered and looked more like mackerel. Unagi should also be served with sanshou or Japanese green pepper, but none was available. There was a long list of true Japanese sake, and some coming from the USA. Most were also horrendously expensive. One of my favourites, Otokoyama (junmai style) from Hokkaido was about £50 for a 720 ml bottle. The same bottle in Japan would be about £13 in a restaurant.

“Great Sushi, friendly service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 2, 2013

Stopped in there very late in the evening on a Tuesday but service was still going and my wife and I had a great time. The sushi is terrific and authentic, presentation is top and they'd put together some sushi recipes that I hadn't seen anywhere else. Strong recommend for sushi lovers.
