“Beer festival”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 7, 2012

We stayed two nights at the end of May for the annual Cambridge beer-festival.

On arrival we didn't get the best first impression as the outside was littered with rubbish but when we came back later that night the rubbish had been cleared, presumably by the staff.

The room was small but clean and we had everything we needed and the location was very central. We couldn't open the window due to the secondary double-glazing but at least the aircon worked fine.

We'd stay again.

Room Tip: The front rooms are facing the road and hence little noisy.

Spent a night here on a business trip. Central location with lovely rear aspect to Parker's Piece. Rooms immaculate and tastefully decorated throughout. Bathroom was larger than average. I had a room at the front and enjoyed the benefit of lots of natural light as both bedroom and bathroom had large windows. Air-conditioning was very effective. Can request breakfast to be delivered to room which was a nice touch.Free parking is available in Regent Terrace behind the hotel between 6.30pm - 8.30am, but beware of traffic wardens. I arrived at 6.25pm and a warden insisted that I go away and return in 5mins.

I've stayed at The Regent a few times on business and leisure trips to Cambridge and I generally avoid it for one simple reason: there is nowhere to park your car. You can't even stop outside the front of the hotel to drop your bags as it causes an obstruction on busy Regent Street. During the day (8:30am to 6:30pm) your only recourse is to park in the Queen Anne Terrace car park, about 300 yards away across Parker's Piece, and lug your bags over. At night, if you're lucky, you can park in the narrow lane behind the hotel on the yellow line and enter through the "tradesmen's" entrance.

The hotel itself is clean and the staff are friendly, but I find the rooms and ensuite bathrooms small and cramped. There is a tiny bar with an equally tiny selection of drinks and no restaurant. Breakfast is "continental", which is hotel-speak for "we don't have a proper kitchen in which to make you a proper breakfast" as it's nothing like any breakfast I've had in continental Europe, but you can't really mark The Regent down for this as many hotels practice this particular exaggeration.

Like many small British hotels, The Regent suffers from the safety requirement to have fire doors placed every few feet in corridors that weren't built for them, making progress to your room with heavy bags from the tiny lift quite challenging.

Overall an adequate hotel, but certainly not car-friendly.

We stayed here for the weekend and thought that the good reviews and clever photograhy would make this a nice place-how wrong we were.
The "Hotel" is sandwiched between a busy main road at the front and Parkers piece at the back with a path running along the back of the "Hotel"- forget it if you want a good nights sleep. Its cental location is indeed ideal-but the thundering traffic and passers by make this a very noisey place. The "Hotel" walls are very thin and you can hear everything that your neighbours are doing- and i mean everything!!!!!
The rooms are indeed very clean and tidy but forget it if you are over 5 feet tall as the beds are( even the double beds) are not full size beds. We complained that the bed was too small ( we are average European sized people) and were informed that this was the standard English double bed size. We could however PAY for the suite and there the bed was bigger-OH, so the standard English beds are smaller then.........We did PAY for the larger bed and the room was adequate.
The free "continental" breakfast was a bit of fruit with boxes of cereal ,croissants, tea ,coffee and condiments......Thats your lot!!!! No cooked English Breakfast was available-which we knew ,so we expected a good continenetal one...........Even a B+B does a cooked Breakfast.
All in all a VERY disappointing EXPENSIVE weekend ( 270 pounds sterling) - we could have stayed at a proper 4 star hotel a few streets away fot 5 pounds more!!!!!!!
This is a good B+B and nothing more. Behind the reception is a plasticated Tripadvisor 4 star rated piece of paper..........hung proudly for all to see.........Beware.
We will, not use this "Hotel" again.

Room Tip: It does not matter if youu sleep at the front or back, top floor or bottom floor-you will not escape...

I stayed for one night for business reasons and as I do know the Cambridge area this review is strictly on the hotel alone.

A warm welcome was given and the staff are lovely. It is clean and even though it is on a main road, that looks quite shabby to be really honest, the hotel does not reflect any of that shabbiness. The hotel has lots of character, it is quaint but not ancient, and has a really good 'feel good factor'.

The rooms are lovely and spacious and the bathrooms are probably larger than average and really well heated. There are some very slight signs of wear and tear ( ie if you were a contestant on Four in a Bed) like peeling paint work in some patches and grooves that need filling etc, but to be honest that is just being fussy and I have probably watched that programme too often, so I was simply looking for things that others might rather than anything that actually was a problem. They provide bottled water, fresh fruit, tea and coffee etc in the rooms and a good range of toiletries in the bathroom. I had a balcony overlooking Parkers Piece, which was nice to open the doors and get some fresh air in the morning.

Breakfast is contintental and for a relatively small hotel gives a good spread of pastries, rolls, cheese and ham, cerials, toast, yoghurts, juices etc. Service again was good and really friendly.

I would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel to any colleague, friend or family for a one or two night stay if visiting Cambridge. There is also a really good Turkish restaurant within a minutes walk and worth a visit.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a balcony

We stayed at the regent for a weekend treat whilst visiting Cambridge. The Regent is classed as a 4* hotel, and we paid almost £300 for the two night stay so I was expecting some quality at least.

The Regent was clean and pleasant enough, however just not worth what we paid. The breakfast was only continental with no cooked option (bit poor for a 4* I thought), and the bar was staffed by untrained bar staff.

The hotel would be fine if it was just a bit cheaper, but for the prices they charged I just expected more!
