“last minute booking, nice place, very clean, wonderful breakfast”

Acorn Guesthouse

Jul 8, 2006

How we happily but accidently ended up at the Acorn: we had a room booked in advance next door at the Worth House, but when we showed up, they acted like they weren't expecting us. they obviously had bumped us b/c we were only booked one night and they got a longer booking from someone else, would've been nice if we'd known that before we showed up in the rain with all our luggage. they said they never got our credit card # and thought we weren't planning to stay with them.... i have the email to prove we sent it... anyway, they suggested we try their neighbors, the Acorn. luckily they had room, the same price, and a very nice, clean place. polite staff, a wonderful breakfast. they told us that it wasn't the first time the Worth House had bumped people just to get a longer booking. Acorn is a fine place, Americans need to understand that hotels in Europe are expensive and small, there are no deals! it's Europe! everyone in the world wants to visit! expect to pay a lot and if it's clean and safe, you're doing good. if the Acorn is booked up, avoid the Worth House.

“Small Rooms, but adequate”

Acorn Guesthouse

We stayed at the Acorn for one night, having booked at the last minute. We picked it over others in the area because it included breakfast in the price. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it if you are looking for somewhere to stay for a long period of time. We needed somewhere close to our friends house, clean, with breakfast and that was what we got. The room was small, but it was perfectly fine for what we needed,(to sleep after a rowdy wedding reception). And the breakfast was perfect for those in need of a good hangover cure! This is not high end luxury, but it is functional, the staff very polite, and the rooms clean.

Not the most welcoming of bed and breakfasts.

My "room" couldn't fit me and my suitcase. The curtains were fixed (I couldn't close them), and with the hotel sign lit up all night outside my window it wasn't very pleasant and didn't make sleeping easy. The bathroom was not clean, and I was disappointed when my shower never warmed up.

On the plus side, checking out was easy.

“Expensive and small”

While our stay at the Acorn was functional, i.e., we got a room with en-suite facilities, parking and reasonable walking distance (15-20 minutes) to the city centre, we feel we clearly did not get value for our money.

We booked through the Cambridge Tourist Office's Accomodation Service. In total, we paid £95 for a family room (one dobule bed + single bed). I do not think this is particularly cheap for Cambridge, and as it was more money than we paid for a room in London, we expected more than we got.

The room was small, there was little space to store anything and to play. There were no lounge in the guest house either. The shower was weak, and there was no bath tub (nor space for any either). Our room was facing the street, so we got some traffic noise. We had to use a fan (no air-con) to keep cool enough at night.

Apart from that, the owners seemed very strict and not very happy. They did answer questions, but they did not seem very friendly.

The breakfast was OK. The interior looked nice and the room was well-presented.

There are probably better rooms than ours (towards the back), but all in all, I think people can get better value for their moeny elsewhere. We're definitely not going back there, if we ever go back to Cambridge.
Having said that, Cambridge is a really beautiful place, so I heartily recommend a visit to anybody.

“Small, but functional”

We had a fine stay at the Acorn. The room was relatively small, with not much room for suitcases given the size of the bed, but we were comfortable during our stay. The room and en suite bathroom were well-maintained. We were in the back of the guest house, but I'm not sure that makes a difference.

The breakfasts were a choice of traditional English breakfast (lots of pork products, beans, etc....I'm sure it took a year off of my life) or a continental breakfast. I suppose in the latter case, I agree with another reviewer who stated that the 'fresh fruit' was not necessarily a bounty.

The staff was pleasant. We had no difficulties with them at all. They allowed us to stow our luggage when we arrived midmorning and our room hadn't been cleaned (indeed -- they carried our luggage up to the room after they cleaned it) and after checking out, but before leaving town. It's a bit of a hike away from the colleges if you're there for that, but certainly not unreasonably distant. I think it took us about 15-20 minutes to get into the town center.

All in all, I'd say our stay was pleasant. The room was a bit expensive, but so was everything in Cambridge. We were much happier there than our hotel in London!
