We booked the Acorn via the helpful tourist information office. Cambridge was very busy and there were few rooms available so we didn't check Tripadvisor first. This guest house is a big dissapointment. The welcome was, to be fair, very freindly from a young lady I assume is the daughter of the owners. Our 'family room' on the ground floor had a double and single bed. Never mind not enough room to swing a cat, we couldn't even fit a cat in there. Our suitcase had to be put on the floor blocking the door. Standard of fixtures was car boot sale. We had a tiny portable tv with only basic channels. The 'bathroom' or more correctly cupboard was so small my shoulders touched each side. There was a toilet and a very basic shower. The fire alarm went off at 7.30am so we went out to start evacuation. The owner was in the kitchen merrily cooking breakfast with guests wandering around looking puzzled. No guidance or instruction from him! We ordered toast and tea when we were in the crowded breakfast room. The toast was medium rare and cold. Our tea was what my granny would have called gnats [-]. I asked for cereal which is locked away but it never arrived. Just an unwelcomig poorly equipped cramped place. I think I now know where Victoria Wood go the inspration for Acorn Antiques!

The staff were very unfriendly. We made a large group booking and then were given conflicting information about whether some people were able to cancel last minute - the proprietor was abrupt and unpleasant in manner.

The room we booked for 2 nights was in the annex (which we knew) and was sold to us as a small double room. We took small to mean the size of the room - not the size of the bed!! It was a tiny room with a 4ft bed up against one wall - no mirror in the bedroom - no lampshade on the light fitting. We asked to be moved to another room - but were told it would only be for one night - and this room had a double bed also up against one wall. We asked for a lampshade but were told this wasn't possible. The website states breakfast served between certain times - but we had to decide when we checked in whether we would have breakfast at either 7.00, 8.00 or 9.00 o'clock . The main reception area and the dining room were very dowdy. The choice for breakfast was quite limited - and the cereals were all hidden away in a cupboard. The fresh fruit was half a banana (with the skin on) half an apple -a few grapes - and not much more. No one was interested in listening to our complaints - just in taking our money. They whole experience was very unpleasant and I would not recommend this establishment to anyone. Cambridge is a beautiful city that deserves better than this.

“Really not worth it”

Way too expensive! I must admit that I am not the B&B type, but I figured it would be ok for one night. Wrong. The smell of bacon throughout the whole house was troubling considering that it was 3:00 pm when we arrived. The room was very small and the mattress desperately needed to be replaced. The toilet would flush one time out of three and breakfast was depressing. Too bad, Cambridge is such a beautiful city.

My husband and I stayed at Acorn Guesthouse for three nights and we will certainly never return there. First of all, when we came in, we got an unfriendly welcome from the owner who was obsessed with having us fill a credit card information form even if we already gave him all our information by phone. We asked for a double room which turned out to be a triple room because there was an additional single bed. This extra bed took a lot of space, which there was not a lot to start with. The bathroom was ridiculously small and stung strongly of bleach (at least one can argue that it must have been clean!). The bed was really uncomfortable and you could feel all the springs in the mattress. As a rule, you are asked not to smoke or bring any smelly stuff in the room (such as take-out food) because of the smell. But the owner kept smoking in the alley outside, just under our window, sending all his disgusting cigarette smoke in the room. Then breakfast... The menu is varied but all breakfast choices were 4-5 courses (Ex: juice, cereal, yoghurt, toast, eggs, etc...) and if you order, for example, only juice and toast, the owner acted as this was weird. One morning my husband ordered cereals. The owner then opened a cupboard where all the cereals boxes were and ask my husband which one he wanted. But all you could see of the boxes were the side with the ingredients list and the nutritional informations. A bit fed up, my husband just asked for the second box from the left, which turn out to be Cheerios! I had a cooked breakfast the last morning and the food was very average. So overall, we do not recommend this B&B as it is expensive, unfriendly and of poor quality.
