“Mediocre in everything, but OK”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 1, 2012

Travelling alone and stayed there for a week, it was the only place I could book up for a consecutive 7 days. There was no single room upon my booking and I the superior twin with English breakfast £150 was my only choice. I read the tripadvisor's tip: avoid Coach House, ask for a room facing river Camb... which turned out to be not bad. The room was spacious with a Double bed and one single bed, tidy and clean; bathroom was small but I didn't need a big one, it was fairly enough for me, it was clean as well. The power of the shower is good. It was cosy enough for me after a tiring journey each day.

The reception, in spite quite a lot previous negative reviews, I found it really OK! I couldn't say they wore a smile very often, but they are helpful and friendly. I didn't judge people's attitude by whether they smile to me or not, the receptionist did offer their help whenever I need to without fair. They did look a bit serious, but why couldn't they when they take your matter seriously? Smile, of course, is a bonus... but certainly, I never met a rude one !!

Restaurant - always a queue in the morning, very slow to serve you to sit, so there were always 4-5 guests waiting. There were 3-4 staff in the restaurant during breakfast time and they were always so busy... serving coffee and tea, cleaning up tables, taking orders endlessly. And the guests in the queue have to wait until they finished some round. To be fair, there were more than a hundred rooms in this hotel and I could understand there would be quite a lot of guests to serve, but I think they should spare just 1-2 minutes to check on the waiting guests, at least, sit them down instead of let them stand and wait. I counted on how many coffee and tea they served each before we could be approached because there was nothing better I could do while waiting. Staff in the restaurant are OK, but slightly less organized. I gave a merit to the girl working in the restaurant with long black hair, very cheerful and helpful !! I don't have her name.

It is not the best hotel, but definitely not bad.. As for the noise, I thought most of the b&bs or even the boutique hotels don't insulate very well. Yes, it is a problem, because I can only sleep with real quiet and dark. But it is not the only hotel which has to blame.

Room Tip: If you are looking for a superior twin, room 108 would be quite a good choice

Have stayed here several times in the last few years. Room standard varies a lot. Sometimes you get a great room with high ceilings, big sash windows and a view of the river, sometimes a cupboard-sized uncomfortable room halfway up a staircase. It's a pleasant easy stroll into town, so a great location. There are many good places to eat within an appetite-building walking-distance, so there's no need to eat in the very mediocre restaurant. Breakfast often slow and merely average. Reception staff often curt.
It must have been a fine Georgian house once, but most of the character seems to have been stripped out now.
Beware! There is an annexe some distance away - a much less good location.

Room Tip: Ask to see the room before checking in. This is normal in some countries, but we British are often...

Didn't like this place at all. I had a room on the top floor under the roof. Well the stairs to the 2 top floors are steep and narrow so taking up the luggage is an adventure. The carpet in the room was really old, sticky and had a strange texture - I didn't feel comfortable touching it so had to wear my shoes all times. Bathroom is small and clean, but had horrible neon light and bad quality soap. Receptionist weren't nice or helpful when checking in and out. Breakfast was ok and room had a nice view on the canal. Also free private parking behind the hotel which is a plus. Wouldn't stay here again and not recommend it.

Bed was too small,no bottled water(which I believe is a must) bathroom too small,we was told we were only entitled to a continental breakfast and at £145 a night that is very expensive.Shower was luke warm.Staff very good. it is only 2minutes walk into the centre of Cambridge and the parking at the back of Hotel was handy.Meal in the evening was poor . Bar was very good and the staff very good and drinks well priced.Over all would not be going back. It was over priced for what you got .

Hotel nicely situated within walking distance from main points of interest with easy access to M11/A14. Plenty of car parking. Stayed in coach house annex room spacious room but gloomy due in the main to heavy, dark furnishings. Beds comfy with nice snug duvets. Bathroom had plenty of soft white towels.
Had dinner in restaurant after reading room brochure praising same. Found food to be bland and virtually tasteless, vegetables soggy. There are better and cheaper places to eat in the city.
Be aware on booking that "including breakfast" means the continental breakfast, it you want cooked it costs another £7.95. Continental breakfast selection pretty poor, croissants obviously not fresh on second day.
Free WiFi but where isn't this the norm these days.

A good hotel in a lovely position near to the river and park in Cambridge. Staff were really friendly and helpful and there's a large car park at the hotel with no added cost. Room was clean and the bathroom large. The only disappointment was breakfast, very little choice, badly organised, the staff didn't regularly check and refill the food or bowls etc. Even when asked for more brown bread, pastries etc that had run out we were told there was none left and they refused to bring more out! Not acceptable when you're paying over £100 for one nights stay.

we had a dinner at Jesus college nearby so being able to drive up, park and wander round Cambridge is a big plus. after we checked out we were able to leave car for a few hours so good so far. room was £115 incl full breakfast for two. room was clean and decorated well even though decor was reminiscent of how hotels were decorated20+ years ago. the mattress was too firm and bouncy for us and this is really not good. not the place for hotels to save money. amazingly we were kept waiting for nearly 10 mins to go into breakfast!!! they were probably understaffed as it was 55 mins to cover off breakfast as the cooked breakfast was a while coming. we have stayed here before but would give somewhere else a go next time mainly because of the unforgiving mattress. a decent mattress topper is urgently needed or simply replace mattress
