“Really, do not stay here”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed March 13, 2008

A dreadful place. I don't mind dated if there's character to go with it. Devere should be ashamed having their name associated with this place. Cambridge is in no way a cheap city, and you feel that this hotel is keen to exploit the image of cambridge to get people to stay here at high rates. I agree with earlier post, stay at a travelodge type place. I felt like my £110 (room only) was designed to make me re-live the Cambridge experience as the room was of similar quality (and dimensions) to a student lodging.

Stayed here recently for 4 nights.
The rooms are dated and shabby.
No way are they to the Devere Brand
At £145 per night, you can expect a higher standard at the Travel Lodge.
Try to complain the management are rude.
If we had not payed up front (which they would not refund) we would of checked out.
Stay away

We booked a special weekend rate of £119 via Travelzoo and got the following included: -
- Bed;
- Breakfast;
- Evening meal to the value of £50
- £20 John Lewis voucher
- Bottle of wine in room

We had a really good time. All the staff were friendly and very helpful. The room was a little outdated, however, it had a great view over the park and was clean and tidy with good bed linen! We had a fantastic nights sleep on a very comfy bed!

The evening meal in the restaurant was nothing short of exceptional. Very good standard of food and even better as it was included in the price!

We would definitely reccommend this hotel. The location was good and really near the shops and bars.

My husband and I had our wedding at the University Arms in 2007 after extensive search of a 20 square mile area for a nice large grand ball room to have our wedding reception. It was the most attractive place on offer, with highceilings, and beautiful wood paneling and being in town center was a bonus as I was having lots of guests from outside the country. Found that our Events Coordinator was very hard to get ahold of, and extremely slow in getting on with anything we asked of her, but it all got done in the end. We went for 2 tasting session, ( which was a bit expensive) but worth it, as the chef was willing to make large changes to the menu to allow for our tastes ( including using a starter for a side dish). They made nothing for the actual wedding night which we tried on the first taster night. We picked the best dished he offered, and used them. It all changed completely. He did serve us a steak that was awful, grissly, and thin, but we jsut went with another option, and made sure he knew quite well that the steak was awful. I wanted to make sure that the food was fabulous, and I on the night it was!! it was delicious, probably too rich really as I ended up with a stomach ache. So we were very pleased with their flexibity. My parents, who paid for the whole affair and are extremelyy picky about food were also very very happy. Our savior was the event manager on the night. We only met him about 4 days beofre the wedding, and ended up having 2 meetings with him to go over all our requests. He made everything work, and made sure all of our requests, however random they were, were met. We wanted tro make a grand entrance in the mirrored foyer from the top of the stairs, and he arranged it that we could slip through the back portion of the hotel in order to enter the foyer by the stairs without being seen by our guests. He also made sure that all of the guests gave us a unique welcome into the ballroom. He was extremely nice, and worked everything around us. The whole night was very much behind schedule due to us taking a little too much of a rest between the wedding and the reception, but he kept us calm, and made sure everything went ok, even if that ment having us make slight changes to the order of things. Our first dance CD would not play when he tested it right before the reception ( my maid of honor had only just given it to him) so he spent a portion of the night trying to find a CD player it would work on, and would come in at times to give us a brief update every once in a while. Quite honestly, several things went compleley wrong at our reception, ( to no fault of the staff) but the staff handled them and us just fine so that we stayed calm. They did everything we wanted. The place looked lovely, and the room was a good size for our large number of guests. I didn't get a single complaint as I do not think anyone was really aware that anything was going wrong. All the guests were well fed, and had plenty of drink on hand, and therefore had no complaints to make. Quite honestly we thought the place was lovely, and they did everything they could on the night to make us happy, and fill all our requests ( which their were many!) Our room was lovely ( not the honeymoon suite) and it had lovely champagne and fruit in it, which was great to feed my little nephew while he rested in the room. We really enjoyed the location, overall had a lovely night! its a nice hotel, so anyone who says its too expensive should be staying in a cheaper place. Yes, it is no 5 star, but it is certainly the nicest and most attractive place to stay in Cambridge. And certainly the most attractive place in Cambridge to have a wedding reception that does not cost huge amounts of money like many of the National Trust houses. If you want a beauiful reception room in Cambridgeshire within reach of other hotels, that does a package for weddings, and will be extremely flexible then the University Arms is the place for you!

  • Liked — The beautiful ballroom, and its access to town
  • Disliked — the front entrance is very ugly and the expensive parking

Just returned from this hotel where a work xmas party was held - for party/functions this hotel is ideal.

Parking: once we got to the hotel (thanks to the sat nav sending us down a dead end!) your car is valet parked for you which saves hassle.

Reception: polite and welcoming staff, quickly checked in and given our room key cards.

Room 135: large king sized bed - very comfortable. Bathroom was clean and moden with bath and shower, and L'Occitane complimentary products. The shower did run hot and cold a few times, but I think the place was fully booked for a number of parties so no doubt this was just due to the number of us party goers getting ready at the same time.

The only downside to the room was leaky ceiling - which did not look too attractive, and was right over the luggage storage area, luckily the leak was noticed before anything got wet/damaged.

The bar area is well stocked and the staff are knowledgeable and helpful.

Breakfast was buffet style with a good choice of fresh fruit, cereals, yoghurt and full english.

I would stay here again if visiting Cambridge, centrally located and of a good standard throughout.

Comfortable and clean with adequate basic facilities. Expensive but this is within easy walking distance of an overcrowded city. Staff were all very pleasant and helpful. Great breakfast though Terry Wogan blasting out of the PA system throughout was bizarre. Bar furnished like a gentlemen's club but again spoiled with a huge TV screen.

We got a parking place which was essential and very convenient.

This hotel is surrounded by pubs & clubs so expect the usual city noise until 4am. The double glazing and air-con (exec suites) deals with this just about.

Food in the restaurant was pleasant but expensive and some portions were small. Service was extremely slow and unsuitable for anyone with other appointments.

OK so it's a little careworn, and could do with some updating, but overall a good experience. The public areas are very nice indeed, and lend some old world class to the experience.
Checkin was smooth and eficient, I was allocated a king room on the second floor. The room was clean and functional, with a terrific bed dressed in good quality linen. Free wired high speed internet access was a bonus. Just plug in, launch a browser, agree to some terms and away you go.
Restaurant was quite nice, with above average food.
Breakfast was well worth the effort, despite the usual high hotel price.
Sure I've stayed in better, and it's far from state of the art, but this is a solid traditional 3.5 - 4 star property.
