“What a gorgeous setting.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2011

I traveled to Madingley Hall by public transport and I have to say this is not the most easiest place to get to so I recommend a car if possible. I was welcomed by wonderful and really helpful staff and the room and views of the beautiful gardens was very impressive and to be honest not expected, so a lovely surprise. I ate food in the evening which was delicious in the bar area which is only open from 18.15 onwards so if you need a drink during the day you will only be given a jug of water with ice (just as a warning). I really enjoyed the breakfast which consisted of a buffet which ranged from the traditional English breakfast to continental breads and fresh fruit to name but a few. A really peaceful and relaxing evening away and I will definitely be going back. Loved it!

Not a bad place the setting is fantastic (in the countryside with well manicured grounds and an old stately home), yet the accommodation we stayed in (cheapest) seemed like a forgotten add on to the main house, it was small and dated and doesn't compare well against more modern and similarly priced places.

The breakfast was the standard English and continental buffet affair, however it was lacking in a few areas, such as the hash browns were undercooked, and condiments were low (no salt and no ketchup) ; small things I know but to me they are usually indicative of how the rest of the place is run.

I would go back as it does have the potential to be a great place and my observations about breakfast could be down to an 'off day'.

It was too far away from Cambridge centre to be truly convenient; the traffic is just too intense.

A perfect place to explore Cambridge and surroundings. Very close to the park and ride and the M11/ A41. Fabulous Tudor house with NGS gardens- you could spend a day exploring the grounds. Good bar with handy bar snacks; the breakfast very good. The rooms are very clean, quiet and comfortable and we had a good sleep. Like most hotels the rooms are quite warm but here you could have the windows wide open and not be disturbed in the night- although the blackbird woke us fairly early on a lovely day.
The staff were very helpful, too.

Went for Bank holiday weekend just one night...had a double room (no.45) and it was fine...bed comfy and nice and quiet...shower was good...cant fault it at all. The grounds are lovely and breakfast was good....albeit shared on one long table...which is fine.

Only downside is getting to Cambridge I suppose. We walked (out of grounds turn right walk up to roundabout and left and walk along till you find a bus stop - get a number 4. Stayed out till late and got a cab back (£11.00).

All in all cant fault it at all..would recommend this to anyone.

Recommended.
Beautiful setting and the staff said we could walk freely around and explore the place, it was like being set free in a National Trust property! Driving through the grounds to the building was an impressive experience in itself.
Room in the 'tower' in the modern part of the building was nice with many windows. They hold conferences here too at weekends and think it would be a great place to go to one.
Cleanliness v.good, polished floors everywhere and English staff which is refreshing!
Breakfast buffet delicious - very good quality ingredients, all sat on big long table with others, although think it would be nice to have individual tables too for couples that are not part of the courses.
Beautiful grounds to explore and easily drivable to Cambridge.

I really struggled to find reasonably priced accommodation in Cambridge and settled on Madingley Hall based on reviews - and price. I was a little sceptical as you dont seem to get much for £60 in this area but I was very impressed. Madingley Hall is an absolutely beautiful building in lovely grounds. It was easy to find although I did get lost trying to get on to the A14 westbound. It felt safe, with ample car parking, features which I wanted but which did not seem to be on offer in similarly priced B&Bs in the area. Be aware, this is not a hotel and it felt very quiet but there is a bar. The actual accommodation is very different in style to the Hall itself as the rooms are modern but of a good standard, very clean with a decent TV, tea/coffee making facilities, comfy bed and good shower power. As noted by other guests, breakfast is served on one long table but I found this quite acceptable and the food was fine. All in all, excellent value for money and no complaints.

The setting of this hotel is just the first delightful thing you encounter when you visit Madingley Hall.

Set in acres of landscaped grounds, the accommodation wings have been pleasantly - and sensitively - added to the rear of the beautiful 16th Century house. Because the hall is principally a Cambridge College for continuing education, many rooms are designed for just one person and are clean and well appointed: perfect for the tired traveller.

They have everything any business hotel could offer: en suite bathrooms, tea/coffee making facilities, etc. What's more, when you open your window you are probably overlooking the wonderful gardens or the small quadrangle around which the modern bedrooms are built.

If you need a walk before your dinner, then the grounds are perfectly proportioned and offer well tended formal gardens from which you can enjoy nothing but peace and the sound of birdsong to soothe you after your day. An excellent breakfast can be enjoyed the next morning in the Dining Hall and you are under the eyes of the watchful and discreet staff.

Dinner can be ordered in advance and, in the summer, take a glass of wine out on to the large balcony and drink in the view.

Overall, one of the best venues I stay at: a real gem hidden away in the countryside, but with Cambridge only a short car ride away when you - regretfully - have to plunge back again into the real world.
