Description: Just off the beaten track, The St. John's Chop House is a sister restaurant to The Cambridge Chop House. The restaurant is situated in a 200 year old former Almshouse. Split over 2 levels with 5 separate dining rooms it offers a wide range of dining options from an intimate meal in our Reading Room to the party sized rooms on the ground floor. Traditional British food is once again the mainstay, sourced as locally as possible, complimented by a local cask ale and an interesting wine list. Reservations are taken and recommended, especially at the weekend.

“Wow!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 30, 2014

We happened upon this restaurant while we were walking around Cambridge and as luck would have it it was right around 6pm. We had seen their other Cambridge restaurant earlier in the day but the prices had been too pricey for what we were looking for. But then we saw they had an early bird menu from 6pm to 7pm, and we thought the prices were fantastic for this level of restaurant: £9 for the main and the option to add £3 each for starter and dessert.

With no booking we got a great table, very friendly staff, and ordered a very nice pint each (£3.30 each). We both decided on a starter, my g/f got the goat cheese and onion tart, I got the poached duck's egg and wild mushrooms on toast. Both were excellent, cooked perfectly and with delicious sauces. For mains g/f got the halibut, I got the roast of the day (which was lamb). Again, superb flavours, everything perfectly cooked, rather than sliced lamb, my lamb was a hockey puck sized lamb shoulder, perfectly tender, fell apart, perhaps a tad on the dry side but with the incredible rich dark sauce it was delicious. Mine came with mash and veg, my g/f's fish with roast potato disks and veg and another great sauce. Portions were large, too large for us to manage dessert.

This restaurant exceeded all of our expectations. The cooking was elevated to a level you'd expect to find in a Michelin star place, these guys can really cook. The service was excellent, the ambiance perfect, the meal delicious from start to end, and at those early bird prices one of the best values ever.

“Very quick service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 25, 2014

Service was very quick, maybe even too quick- sat down at 7 and had finished mains by 8! Food itself was suberb, both had roast lamb dinner for mains and it was beautiful. Cost was reasonable too.

“Average”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 22, 2014

The restaurant is itself very nice and has a good atmosphere. Service is ok, food is just average and generally is too pricey for what you get in return. There are much nicer places you can dine in for the same amount of money in Cambridge.

“A lovely lunch”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 20, 2014

Choose this restaurant for a late lunch and did not regret it. Ambience was a bit lacking, but this was probably because of the time (2pm) when most other diners were departing. Very nice, efficient, characterful guy on duty and excellent food and house wine. Would recommend the poached duck egg and wild mushroom starter and the roast shoulder of lamb, but everything was tasty, well presented and, taking advantage of the set price lunch menu, very well priced. Will certainly eat here again when next in Cambridge.

“Could have been so good”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed April 17, 2014

Could been so good except for the fact that the staff could not be bothered to do what they are paid to do a "good evening "would have done it the food great such a shame that the front of house staff were not on the ball ,even on the pitch used to love the chop houses now sadly no more
