“What a successful formula - great service, great food, great presentation - top-drawer Italian food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 3, 2014

The team running this place deserve every success. San Carlos, for years now, has been run like a pressured production line, moving people through quicker than they want to be moved, even for high-spending business customers. These guys had had enough and broke away to set up this place - so you get all the quality of food, cooking, presentation, and family-feel service from the waiting staff.

Look, it's not 'cheap' (we paid £125/couple, including 10% service, but then we did have 3 bottles of wine between 4) but, if you want the quality all round then you get it in spade-fulls. Having said that, if you just want a one-course pizza, that's also fine.

The guys deserve every success, and it looks like they've got a winning formula as it was packed out.

Most enjoyable evening we've had out with friends for a long, long time

“Very disappointing”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 3, 2014

Went with six friends for a birthday celebration a Friday night. The first table we were sat at was very noisy - unable to hear our conversation over the cackling of the neighbouring tables. We were able to get reseated at a less noisy table but this is not the place to go for a quiet intimate meal.

And so to the food. Poor. Several of the party had fish which was disappointing - overcooked and tough. I had a calzone for my main course which was like I would imagine an Italian Cornish pasty to be. Service wasn't great either.

So, if you go here stick to the basics and avoid those tempting more expensive dishes as they could well disappoint. I won't go back; I dislike paying good money for bad food.

“Nothing special”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 3, 2014

We visited al bacio to celebrate my mum's birthday after hearing the fantastic reviews. Unfortunately we were a bit disappointed. When we arrived, the serving staff were in a state of complete chaos. We were seated relatively quickly however one of our party was not given a menu and despite the fact the waiter promised he would get one, it never arrived. The confusion continued when we tried to order and a number of the waiters claimed they could not take our order despite just standing around doing nothing which was extremely bizarre!

We ordered the prosciutto bruschetta to share which was lovely to start. However the main was rather disappointing. Two of us went for the monkfish and king prawn special which was extremely good portion-wise but rather disappointing in terms of flavour. The sauce was rather bland and did not really add anything to the dish. When you are paying 17.95 (and then paying for sides on top) you really expect something with a bit more wow factor. The tiramisu for pudding was nice.

Overall I would not return to al bacio. It was a nice evening but the food was not amazing and the service was a bit of a mess.

“Great atmosphere”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 2, 2014

I last visited this restaurant about 46 years ago, then it was a Bernie Inn for those who can remember that far back, Bernie Inn specialised in Prawn cocktails, Rump steak, Black Forest Gateaux and a bottle of Mateus Rose average food at good prices. The food at Al Bacio is beautiful, lovely flavours professionally served at fair price and in a good, typically Italian atmosphere. The owner who serenaded us as we waited for a table seemed to love his work and was proud of his restaurant, his staff were attentive and hard working. I visited the restaurant with my wife and two daughters and all enjoyed the experience. Only one slight complaint, we seemed to be the only table who were not offered a complimentary glass of limoncello which my daughters were looking forward to but otherwise excellent.
