The 105 foot high (32 metre) Cabot Tower on Brandon Hill is in the city centre of Bristol, England. The foundation stone was laid in 1897 (and the tower opened in 1898) to commemorate the 400th anniversary of explorer John Cabot’s voyage to America in 1497. The tower was built from red sandstone with cream Bath Stone details. The roman numerals CCC (400) are engraved on the four sides of the tower. The winged figure on top represents Commerce.

If you are in Bristol, don't miss this magnificent tower overlooking the harbour. The gardens around it are lovely (called Brandon Hill), and you are almost certain to see some grey squirrels (I saw about four).

The tower is free admission (wow!)and not hard to climb (I did the spiral staircase in one, at age 65). The view is wonderful, especially over the new leisure and housing complex being built at Canons Marsh (where At-Bristol is situated). You will also be able to see the SS Great Britain, the Council House and Cathedral,the impressive University Tower and just a glimpse of the Clifton Suspension Bridge, and obviously a vast amount of Bristol.

Once you've seen the Tower the shops and restaurants of Park Street and Queens Road are a few minutes walk away
