After reading the various reviews, we booked into this hotel with mixed feelings.
We were greeted with nice and friendly staff, got us all sorted with our room no problem. Throughout the rest of our stay, the staff were nothing but pleasant. the new manageress was very helpful as well.
The room was clean, bed linen was fresh, the bathroom was spotless. Rooms were serviced every day with fresh towels, and clean bed linen on the 3rd day. However, it smelt and felt damp. So damp that my asthma was starting to get affected. We ended up having to leave the window open for the majority of our stay.
Another thing that was a bit weird was there a family of ladybirds living in our room. We moved them all outside but every morning they were back. Sweet, but as they're insects, probably not a good thing.
Our room had a tv with a freeview box, but had no remote for the tv, which was a bit annoying. Also, the tea and coffee making facilities obivously hadn't been changed in a while. The cups were full of dust and the biscuits were softer than the Andrex puppy. The kettle lead wasn't long enough to plug it in, so we had to set it on the floor by the desk to make a cup of tea. The kettle could do with being changed as well, it had more limescale than I'd ever seen before.
The breakfast was a bit hit and miss the 3 nights we stayed there. One morning there were no bowls for cereal, but the manageress was super quick to fetch some, and another morning there was no butter for toast, but pleanty of jam. Also the coffee was hit and miss, one morning it was a decent cup of coffee, the next it was dirt in cup.
We had a couple of meals in the bar, and they were fine, I'd recommend the burgers, they were particularly good. My partner enjoyed his, but two of my evening meals ended up being lukewarm and having bits of plastic and foil in them from the plastic containers they were originally from. The bar itself was nice, they had a selection of beers and spirits, and had board games and a very comfy sofa.
Ok, now I know this review is pretty harsh, but for the price we paid, the location and the staff, we were happy enough to stay there, and even book in for a 3rd night. I've stayed in some shockingly bad places and some swish places, and this is bang in the middle, hence the 3 stars. They've got a new manageress in the hotel and she's newly in the hot seat, so I expect this hotel to improve greatly during the coming months.
