“Lovely weekend away”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 4, 2012

Had a really nice stay at this guest house. Room was very well decorated and clean. Bed very comfy though feather duvet was a bit too warm! Staff were really friendly, the night porter/chef was really helpful in recommending a restaurant. Hotel was also in a great location!

Have just spent 3 nights at the Brooks Guest House. Its a lovely place. The room was nicely decorated and there was a plentiful supply of beverages in the room every day. There was plenty of choice for breakfast and the staff were all very friendly and went out of their way to be helpful. Its ideally located being very central. I'd definately recommend this guesthouse.

Think of Brooks as more of a Boutique Hotel. Like staying over at someone's massive, 24-bedroom luxury house in the middle of Bristol. I can see where the guest house title came from, but in my mind that title generally refers to larger B&Bs. Brooks is definitely in whole other category.

There's so much to say about our two-night stay (Sun & Mon) at Brooks, that I'll keep it simple:

The Good:
- Location; right by St Nick's Market, perfect for getting around Bristol in no time.
- Staff VERY friendly & helpful. Not many are English, but they do their job superbly. The girl on reception is quite possibly an ex-Swedish model!
- The Night Porter is also the Breakfast Chef and despite having the longest shift ever my god is he good at his job. Eggs Benedict recommended by my partner, she loved them.
- Room is in a very modern 'twee' style - with a hint of nuvo-vintage. This is no pokey B&B.
- Ensuite, while not massive, is very good. Shower is excellent - always hot & powerful, and the mirror was heated so you could use it straight after your shower.
- The Bed was the most comfortable we'd slept on for a while. Reinforcing their attention to quality throughout the hotel.
- Useful lift if you've got heavy bags and a room on the 2nd floor.
- View from our window was great; nice amount of sky, we could see the courtyard, the market etc.

The Not-So-Good:
- The free wifi didn't reach our room. Fine if you stand by the door, but no further. My iPad felt useless.
- The walls are paper-thin; we heard our neighbour getting up at 6am, doing his business, flushing the toilet, coughing his lungs up, then getting his money's worth in the shower.
- The window didn't shut easily, and when it did there were two air vents at the top that you couldn't close. If there's *any* noise outside, you'll hear it clearly.
- Why do they have the water fountain in the courtyard on 24/7? As above, you can hear it all night.

Overally, the negatives aren't really that terrible. We had a fantastic break in Bristol, and can't recommend Brooks enough. Just cross your fingers that you don't get a room on the noisy side, as other reviewers on tripadviser have.

I booked one night so we could explore Bristol and the university precinct with my husband and teenage son and we were all very taken with this lovely guesthouse. We loved the central location and took advantage of the subsidised parking nearby in Queen Charlotte Street. Friendly welcome from the general manager, Thomas. Gorgeous room and ensuite, comfortable beds, and a lovely luxurious feel to the place. A delicious cooked breakfast served by friendly staff. We cannot rate this place highly enough and are hoping our son is offered a place at the university so we have lots of excuses to stay again!

Great friendly service in central Bristol. Owner was very friendly and welcoming. Room was well laid out and complete with kettle and hairdryer. The room was also very clean. The only downside was that we could hear the near by night club late on Saturday night. If we return to Bristol we would however definitely stay here again.

A group of 22 of us stayed in this guesthouse for a hen weekend in mid October. We loved it.
I was a bit worried that the guesthouse would label us as a rowdy hen group and treat us badly as a result, but nothing of the kind happened. The staff were just lovely throughout the whole weekend and by the time we left all of the girls (including the mother of the bride and groom) were raving about how much they liked the guesthouse.
The location is very central. Most of our group arrived after 8pm on the Friday evening, but we still received a lovely welcome from Alexandro. The lounge and breakfast area is very pretty - all wooden tables with a modern kitchen - and it has a very homely feel to it. The breakfast was cooked in front of us and could not be faulted.
The rooms are relatively small, but all of them are tastefully decorated and exceptionally clean. The White Company toiletries in the bathrooms are a nice touch. When the windows were open in the rooms that didn't face the courtyard there was quite a bit of noise from outside, but we couldn't hear anything when the windows were closed. My only complaint is that one room that we booked as a triple turned out to be a twin room with a sort of camp bed in it, which I was told did not make for a good night's sleep. If you are booking a triple room I would recommend double checking that it has three proper beds in it.
The staff were very accommodating and friendly. They were happy to order taxis for us, they were flexible when we wanted to change around the rooms, and they were attentive without being overbearing. Agnes, Dominic and Alexandro were all charming.
I would definitely come back. It is truly refreshing to find a good quality guesthouse that is so homely.
