“Masonic Ladies Weekend”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 21, 2014

This was a Masonic Ladies Weekend 14th-16th February 2014. The package deal was two nights Bed and Breakfast with a Dinner on the Friday and a Gala Evening on the Saturday.
Our reception was excellent with our luggage speedily sent up to our room. This was spotless with everything you required available and extremely comfortable. We were very impressed when on returning from sightseeing on the Saturday, a supervisor complete with clipboard, was checking that the room had been correctly serviced.
We did not sample the a` la carte menu as the package included a limited set menu for the dinner on the Friday evening. The standard of food for this and the Gala dinner on the Saturday evening was disappointing. It lacked imaginative presentation and preparation and could have been so much better with some initiative and thought. Why serve uncooked mange tout which had absolutely no flavour is beyond my understanding!
The staff at the hotel are very professional and efficient and it is a well run operation.

I am so happy to you hear such positive feedback about your stay with us. I was especially pleased to read your comments about our team in housekeeping, this is an area often overlooked and I am certain they will appreciate the acknowledgement. Your comments about the menu is something that I will personally look into and with the assistance of our chefs, I am certain we will produce something more to your taste on your next visit with us.

Kind Regards

Having used this hotel for the fourth time this year for business, can I say have friendly and helpful the staff are. There are a few in particular that go that extra mile to make your stay very pleasant. When sitting in the restrauant on your own, they really make an effort to make you feel welcomed. I didn't want to leave to be honest. Can't wait to go back, and my the way the food is excellent!

We stay at Aztec regularly with our children aged 11 and 9. The rooms are comfortable, clean, ensuites are good with excellent showers. The little things like tea/coffee, hairdryers, robes and Crabtree and Evelyn toiletries all help to make the stay feel a little bit luxurious. The children love it. Apart from having a 'children's mini bar' complete with apple juices and chocolate bars (complimentary) they can also order warm milk and cookies in the evening (again complimentary). It's a safe environment for them and they always make good use of the huge indoor pool while we enjoy the hot tub. Winter or summer, these facilities are great and the glass doors opening out onto the verandah's are super in the summer with sunbeds and food/drink service. You'd never know you were in a business park. It's really very well designed, with attractive landscaping, ponds, ducks etc and everything right on the doorstep. The food is always very good. I think the best thing for me about the hotel is the staff. They are incredibly friendly and always bend over backwards to accommodate us, always polite, always chatty, joking with the children. It's so important and makes such a difference. I really do look forward to going there. We have never had a bad stay and can't thank all the staff enough for their friendly and professional attitude and service. We will continue to choose this above other hotels and have numerous dates already booked for this year. In addition to everything I've already mentioned, it is also very reasonably priced. We look forward to our next weekend stay and thank you to everyone there for making it so enjoyable.

Room Tip: We always have interconnecting rooms, generally on the 3rd floor (family rooms).

We have just returned from a weekend at this hotel celebrating a birthday, and have had a very mixed experience. Some aspects were as you would expect from a 4 star hotel, however other areas fell short, which was disappointing.

Check in on arrival was swift, however I was charged £50 to my card and when I questioned this, was told it was 'company policy', despite the entire stay and all meals having been paid for in advance as part of a package. As part of this package, we should have had a bottle of champagne waiting in our room on arrival, which was missing. We phoned reception, and after a short wait it was sent up, however mistakes like these detracted from what should have been a celebratory experience.
The room was clean and fairly luxurious, although poor lighting made getting ready in the evening almost impossible. More lighting would have made the room seem far more appealing, as it became dingy as soon as it went dark outside. Noise in other rooms and the corridors meant that we had very disturbed sleep, particularly on our first night, which was a shame.

Having said this, the hotel's free wifi was excellent, and was fast enough to stream iPlayer (no need to pay extra for the premium package). The shower was also fantastic and very powerful.

We ate all of our meals over the weekend in the hotel restaurant, and the food did not disappoint! The 'Taste of the South West' option (as a starter) was absolutely delicious, and had a great range to choose from. Our steaks were also cooked to perfection, and were high quality. The service was poor on the first night, as we were completely ignored after finishing our coffee, despite the restaurant being quite quiet. I agree it is nice not to be rushed, however this took it to the extreme and came across as pretty rude. Certain staff seemed more intent on laying the tables for the following morning, rather than attending to their paying customers. The Sunday Lunch deal is fantastic value for money, although we were disappointed that one meal came with a burnt Yorkshire pudding. As a trained chef myself, I would not have sent this out, although admittedly we were in a hurry and so did not complain at the time. I am sure that it would have been corrected if we had, as the staff on Sunday were brilliant and could not have done more for us!
The service on Sunday, both at lunch and dinner, was absolutely brilliant, thanks in particular to Karl Wood who made us feel very welcome indeed. Will, our waiter, was also lovely, and this made up for the odd service the previous night. Staff like these make the whole experience memorable for all the right reasons.

We also enjoyed the Spa, having opted for the 'Above and Beyond' package. Sam gave my partner a fantastic manicure, and was lovely and friendly. We both had back, neck and shoulder massages, which were amazing! The staff in the spa were brilliant and helped us to relax and enjoy the day. Our fruit platter and Bucks Fizz was also delicious and a treat.

Unfortunately, there are a few more negatives: we asked at reception (on Sunday evening) for an express checkout the following morning, as we knew we would be in a hurry. We were told that our bill would be slipped under our door. The following morning, at 10.30am (30 minutes before regular checkout) we were still waiting. We couldn't afford to waste time, and so checked out normally. I do not see the point in offering this option if it is unreliable. Another little complaint: we also asked at reception for a refill of milk for our room as we had not had the maid service that day, and were again told that some milk would be sent up. This never happened. It is a small complaint, however added to our overall impression of the hotel, and was not the service I expected from a 4 star establishment.

The car packing was complementary due to the length of our stay, which was a nice touch.

All in all, a mixed bag. We would return, as certain aspects made up for the errors. Thanks to the outstanding service again from Karl at breakfast on our final morning, we left with fond memories.

Superb customer service from the moment I stepped into the hotel. Room was great, leisure facilities are far better (and bigger) than a lot of equivalent hotels. Bar/Restaurant was busy, but nothing out of the ordinary. As a business traveller using the hotel, I will definitely be staying again.

Room Tip: Upgrade if you can.

This was a surprise: a nice hotel booked by work! Very nice room: roomy, with a "living space" as well as a comfy bed. The gym was excellent: well equipped with modern kit. Food was healthy and tasty: much better than "usual" hotel fayre.

I would definitely stay again, hopefully for longer!

So there are perks to working away! Really glad to hear that you felt the Aztec was a home away from home and that you enjoyed the time you spent with us. We have just opened our Functional Studio in the spa to give more space and additional equipment for those looking to have a thorough work out. Thank you for your comments about our food offering – we work hard to keep it interesting for guests who may spend several nights away from home. Hope you see you again soon!

Kind regards

A comfortable, clean and friendly hotel with many facilities. The rooms were very nice and the staff were always helpful and attentive. The restaurant was good quality, both for breakfast and evening meals, and the price was reasonable too for the high standard of hotel this is. Whilst I didn't have time to make use of the gym and spa other guests I was with reported it was very good. Overall a lovely stay at the Aztec.

Thank you for picking up on many points – it’s great to hear that you liked the room, the service and the food. I hope you have a chance to return to us soon and sample the spa for yourself, whether it be for an intensive work out or to soak in the Jacuzzi.
