“Non-standard HIE”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 10, 2011

While walking distance from the city centre and directly opposite the main city centre rail station, the downside of the location is that the hotel faces a major road which is very noisy with both regular traffic and fairly frequent emergency vehicles.

This hotel didn't start life as a Holiday Inn Express (the car park keypad bears the Accor group name) and so some of the normal attributes that you associate with the brand are missing. For example the bathrooms are not at all like the HIE bathroom - mine had damaged floor tiles and a curiously large shower - as though it really had aspirations to have a bath but had been converted. The lighting is poor - not helped in my room by the missing lampshade for the wall lamp (at head hight, hence no lamp shade, no doubt). For example - if you wanted the desk lamp then you also had to have the room lobby light and the main light in the room on. Why? The TVs have smallish screens but plenty of channels. The beds are clean, firm and comfortable. The furniture is functional.

The car park at £6 per night is reasonable but a tad difficult to use. You need to park first outside the back of the hotel (which really does look like something from a gangster movie and could be sooo much nicer) then guess which door gives access to the reception. If you guessed right you then need to wait for someone to come through or use the pushbutton to gain access - there must be a lot of crime here to need this level of security. Then reception will give you a number. Go back to the car and drive to the garage and use the number to get the door to open. Keep the number with you as you'll also need it to get pedestrian access out of the garage (ditto remark on crime) but note this is NOT the same as the way you drove in - you need to go up to the next level to get out as a pedestrian. Just make sure you unload your bags before you drive to the garage as it's tricky to get in and out as a pedestrian with luggage.

My room had double glazed units and then another glazed layer on top of that so it's difficult to see what else HI can do to reduce traffic noise in the rooms. I was on level 3 facing the road and it may be better higher up or facing away from the road.

The room had a very effective electric wall heater and a/c for the summer months. No toileteries in the bathroom beyond the wall dispenser units.

There was an ice machine just off the lobby next to snack and drinks dispensers and there is a Tesco express about 5 mins away by foot. The hotel also has its own bar.

Breakfast was pretty ghastly. I'm not quite sure how the orange juice is made, but it tastes one step down from UHT juice - perhaps it comes in concentrated tins or powder but you probably will not be going back for a second glass. The so-called 'cooked' breakfast combines cardboard tasting sausages with scrambled egg - that tastes like its been made from egg powder rather than eggs. The coffee is almost undrinkable. So HI save a few quid on ingredients but its not a good experience for the traveller. Conversely the cereals and danish pastries were excellent.

I wouldn't choose to stay here again and I think HI should really review this place to ensure that it doesn't tarnish the brand. It's cheap as chips (my room was only £65 on a flexible basis) but there is better value accommodation in the area and if I didn't know better I would think twice about staying at HIE having stayed here.

Room Tip: Avoid the road-side if you are bothered about traffic noise

Dear The_Meon_Meerkat
Thank you for taking your precious time to write such elaborate review to share with fellow travellers.
We have recently passed our IHG Quality Evaluation audit hence we have met all IHG standards as Holiday Inn Express. It is rather unfortunate for you to think otherwise.
This hotel was converted in 1999 and has always traded as HIE. The car park belong to the Bristol City Council so any branding on their property does not reflect on ours. Our unusual quality would be a HIE located in the city centre.
The keypad on the door is standard for security and acts as a deterant as any hotel would for their guests security.
All our bedrooms facing the main road are triple glazed in order to reduce noise pollution and guests are able to request for quiet rooms or higher floors when making their resevations.
Once again I would like to thank you for your contribution. Please do not hesitate to contact me in order to further discuss any concerns which you may have.
Regards
Sharine Carrow

Nice location and friendly and helpful staff. Parking is £6 a night on top. Breakfast is standard HIE fare... if they want to know how to do it properly, they should ask the HIE at LHR T5. The scrambled eggs here are dire. Otherwise a nice stay.

Stayed on Saturday and Sunday evening. The hotel was quite busy but the staff were very helpful in providing information and maps of Bristol. The rooms were clean and comfortable although the wall light in one of our rooms was missing its cover so the bulb and socket were exposed, a health and safety issue which i reported and hope will be addressed asap.
The cooked breakfast is very poor consisting of poor quality sausage , what i am fairly sure was reconstituted scrambled egg and lukewarm beans. The cereal choice was adequate and yogurt, fruit, croissants and toast were available.
The hotel were very accomodating and stored our luggage on our departure day until we returned to collect them at 3.30pm.
Owing to the reasonable costs of the rooms and perfect location to the train station i would certainly return to this hotel.
A review of the cooked breakfast would give this hotel an excellent rating as opposed to a very good.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the car park at the rear are quieter although the lights from the multi storey car...

Stay at this hotel about 10-15 nights per year. They still don't remember me! They oblige to my booking requests and are nice people. In the weekend the place can be very noisy with people drinking and shouting in the corridors and leaving left overs from their take-away outside theirs doors; yes, it can be very smelly. My non-smoking room was very smokey but I suppose this is the guests' responsibility. Extremely convenient near the Train Station and Airport bus. Breakfast is not very healthy and quality could be imroved I believe. Getting a free newspaper is a nice little extra. I will go again and again and would love to see improvements.

Great value hotel with very friendly staff. Nothing was too much trouble, rooms were clean with all mod cons. Great value. Just what was needed for a quick overnight trip to this beautiful city.

Visiting my youngest daughter at the University for a couple of days with my 21 year old son so wanted something central as I wanted to have a look round Bristol as well. Wasn't disappointed with my choice of hotel. Excellent. Staff nice and friendly, everything clean and tidy. Wanted to order some food late in the evening. Reception set it up for me no bother and got a chinese takeaway delivered to the hotel for me inside 20 minutes. Came by train and you literally walk outside the station entrance and there is the hotel at the end of the road. Couldn't be simpler. Will stay again.

Room Tip: get a room on the top floor and you get a good view across the city

I stayed at this hotel in October, the staff were really friendly and helpful. Rooms were clean and the location was perfect as we were going to a party at the Marriott so were able to get a taxi which the reception were really helpful in booking. Also although the Hotel is situated in a very busy part of Bristol and near to a bar, we had a room facing the back of the hotel and there was absolutely no noise atall. The only negative I would say is that the hotel needs to get new pillows, they were soooo thin but still didn't interrupt our sleep.
When we went for breakfast in the morning, it was very busy but we were able to get a table and the breakfast buffet was fully stocked up and ready for a busy morning! The gentleman in breakfast was great, nothing was too much trouble, he was helping people with their trays and quick in replenishing the buffet. Great member of staff to have in the hotel. Overall our stay was really good and I would recommend people to stay there.

Dear Sarah8118

Thank you for taking your time to post a review for my hotel. We are glad to hear that you have had a great stay with us and the Breakfast team is pleased to be included in the positive comment too. We do have 2 selection of pillows, Firm and Soft, as part of our re-branding a year ago. However your comment is a great reminder that Housekeeping needs to stay on top of the situation to make sure replacement of pillows take place to ensure a great night sleep for our guests.

We look forward to your return soon
