We have been to Berwick Lodge twice in as many weeks now and each visit was pure joy.
Even in those two weeks there had been changes to the menu, so you are not faced with the same options on return visits. It also gives me confidence that the ingredients are really fresh. The food itself is absolutely wonderful and while beautifully presented the focus is well and truly where it should be ... on the taste. Over our two visits we have sampled beef dishes, as well as pork, fish and fowl. All were excellent and unlike some high end restaurants, you do not leave feeling peckish.
The service is excellent. But more than that all the staff are friendly - not artificial or chummy, but genuinely warm. We never had extended waits for food, yet never felt rushed. Service as it should be.
The first of our visits was with our daughter (10) and it was so nice to see the staff with her. She is well behaved and really appreciates good food, but we have been to other 'good' restaurants where the staff seemed to regard all children as a nuissance. Not so here. There was no 'children's menu' with fish fingers and chips. Really, if you take your children to a good restaurant, why would you want to feed them poor food?
As to value for money? It is not cheap ... but I have paid FAR more for dining experiences that couldn't hold a candle to Berwick Lodge.
If I had to find niggles ... the road out to the lodge is not for the faint-hearted. And (a nod and a wink to our waitress ... ) the steak knives could be sharper.
