“Superb staff, attention in orchard restaurant excellent .”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 9, 2013 via mobile

My husband and I have just returned from a week-end break at Holme lacy, I would recommend eating at the orchard restaurant if you can. The staff in the restaurant were excellent, in particular a waiter called "Jose". His attention to detail was impressive. I cannot eat dairy products, Jose remembered, and without prompting, asked the chef to prepare a dairy free desert, which was yummy! Although some of the rooms needed some TLC regarding the plasterwork, in a hotel of this calibre, it really is a small point. Well done to all the staff, an excellent stay, cannot wait to visit again.

Firstly you have to praise the entertainments team. The nightly shows would rival the west end for entertainment value, they were fantastic. We had a good four day stay in an historic room overlooking the grounds at the front of the house. The grounds were lovely, so well kept and a lovely setting for an evening stroll after dinner. The food was excellent, we chose from the buffet every night and found something different to try each time. The staff were attentive and friendly. Thanks specially to Tom who tried to teach us archery, I finally got to hit the target! We will definitely try out another resort in the near future.

Having been to Holme Lacy a coup,e of years ago, we were very disappointed with the entertainment which we found cruise ship like and very loud. We tried then to go to the Terrace Bar which was supposed to close at 10.30 but was always closed at around 10 leaving us with no option but to go to bed.

However, this year I got a good late deal on a HistoricJunior Suite which also gave us four nights access to the fine dining I the Orchard. This was a little disappointing this time as we had the same menu every night and the portions were very small. I also found the overhead lighting made it feel like a school dining room and hence there was no atmosphere. The service and food were excellent however.

The suite was large and spotless and as the weather was lovely we sat on terrace during the day. The food in the bar is still overpriced but the staff are friendly and helpful. However, as before, we wandered down to the Pavilion Bar after dinner and decided to leave after ten minutes and went to the Terrace Bar with a view to sitting outside with a drink. It was 9.45pm and a beautiful evening. The doors to the outside we're firmly closed and there was a sound of washing up coming for the bar. We went for a walk and returned at 10 to find the bar closed, despite being told by staff that they close at 10.30, leaving us no option but to go to our room.

Pool was good. Hot tub was cold and the changing room needs a refurb. Quizzes as ever were excellent and hosted by the lovely Alison - a credit to Warners. We definitely will not be returning g next year owing to the new ABC pricing which means we would not automatically get every night in thee Orchard. We may return to Thoresby where they have a beautiful spa and where it is possible to get a drink after 9.30in the bar or the Library where they also have the Thoresby Hall
Players.

Room Tip: I think all the rooms are ok but we've always upgraded.

Been here many times and still as good as previous visits.
Gardens are superb we were lucky to have very good weather.
My husband always enjoys the fishing.
Entertainment was very good on this visit can be a bit hit and miss.
Our only grouse is they now charge for coffee after dinner £2,50 per cup
think this is a very mean cut back a bit penny pinching.
We stayed in historic room on previous occasion and thought the orchard
dining room was lovely everything just right no need for complaint there..
We shall return.

We have just returned from a weekend at Holme Lacy. We had an historic suite, which entitiled us to 'fine dining'. This was such a disappointment. The orchard dining room is dark and gloomy, and background music did nothing to help. The tables are close together, which does nothing to help the appearance of the room. The real disappointment though, was the food. The presentation is not too bad, but the quality and choice is not up to standard. I felt that we would have been better eating in the main restaurant. I undertand that the Orchard has 2 rosettes - I don't know how they managed this, as the food is not good enough. We had been looking forward to this dining experience, having just travelled up from Cricket St Thomas where we had 3 nights in the dining room and 1 night at Finocchi's where we were entertained pre-dinner and during dinner, and the food during the whole 4 night stay was excellent - unfortunately this was to be the hightlight of our week away, after the very poor experience at Holme Lacy's Orchard.
We enjoyed our bar snacks though, and the nightly entertianment was really good. The entertainment team work hard, and we especially enjoyed the pianist.
Another great disappointment is the charge that has been introduced for tea and coffee. This is so obviously a sign of cost cutting, as those guets who previously wanted a 'special' tea or coffee have always been able to purchase these in restaurant or any other bar.
This example coupled with Warners ABC pricing will disappoint many regulars.
However, we do usually enjoy our Warner breaks, and will give them another try, it is unlikely to be at Holme Lacy though, and this time we will be prepared for the extra charge awaiting us for tea or coffee!!

Room Tip: Signature rooms are decorated nicely enough, but thereis not much in the way of views from a patio r...

Took parents for a weekend break to this most beautiful house and gardens. The surroundings and walks are amazing and the history talks of the house were very interesting.
All of the staff including restaurants ,Maids, shops, bar, and especially entertainment were fantastic. Nothing is too much trouble, they are all enthusiastic and seem to be like one big family.

The rooms were very clean and well looked after. Just one problem we did have to upgrade parents room as the room allocated to them was above the swimming pool. This made it very hot and there was only a view of a roof which was quite disappointing. If booking this hotel ask about this before booking room number was around 272.

The swimming pool and steam room were excellent and very good for lane swimming. The spa pool was cold and the sauna not very hot.

Overall our weekends entertainment was brilliant and the resident team of entertainers were great dancers and singers and musicians.
Thank you for a lovely weekend Holme Lacy Hotel !

Room Tip: Ask for rooms with a view before booking .

Pulled up at the entrance and met immediately with 'boarding' instructions by very efficient staff. Directed to our room 212, the 'Princess Beatrice' first floor historic suite which occupied a front wing overlooking the putting green and down to the lake. Absolutely excellent except for a tiny niggle of only a fixed showerhead over the bath. Occupancy of this room entitled us to full use of the a la carte Orchard Restaurant. A very elegant room, an attentive waitress (Roberta), and reasonably priced wine. The food was good quality - possibly smallish 'nouvelle cuisine' sized portions with little in the way of vegetables. The provision of hand gel dispensers was reassuring, and very similar to the prevailing regime on cruise ships.
The in-house entertainment was enthusiastic and enjoyable without being over the top. However, the main event was the Buddy Holly / Rock 'n Roll Tribute on the Saturday evening which was the draw for us. Excellent - and we still remembered all the words! Of the daytime events on offer, the tour of the house with Angela Williams was fascinating, and highly recommended. After, we took a pleasant walk to the local church to see the tombs of the previous owners of the house. We also had a session with air rifle shooting, which was great fun but not met with much accurate success. Apart from that, we simply enjoyed the good weather in the extensive gardens; always somewhere quiet to sit and watch the ducks. A most enjoyable break.
