“Traditional English hospitality at its best”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 25, 2014

Stayed 2 nights here when the weather was baking hot and it was really lovely. The hotel is old and quaint, the staff are super polite and helpful, and the food in both the bar and restaurant were very good indeed. My room was comfortable, the bathroom was clean - there's no cause for complaint here at all. A lovely stay in a very lovely location.

We arrived around 4pm just as, unfortunately, a large party departed. This meant there was no one on the reception to greet us for several minutes which alarmed us somewhat (wondering what the attention for the rest of our stay was going to be like). We needn't have worried as all the staff were very pleasant and attended to our every need. We stayed in room 7 overlooking the garden which meant that it was quieter and although the weather was very warm with the windows open the room temperature was tolerable. I would agree with a previous guest about the stains on the carpet. The bathroom was compact. It would probably be better use of the space to have put a decent shower cubicle in rather than a bath with shower over. The shower screen was not sufficiently deep to prevent water going all over the floor so to prevent this the tap needed to be on a minimal setting and the shower taken as close to the wall as possible. The bath was quite deep so anyone with slight mobility/agility problems may struggle to take a shower safely. We had a cup of tea in the garden and were given shortbread biscuits the size of saucers-delicious. Dinner each of the 2 evenings was sublime. Initially we were disappointed that a cooked breakfast incurred additional cost but having had a splendid dinner the evening before bacon and egg was not on our agenda. The buffet breakfast was ample and varied...we loved it and didn't miss the cooked version at all, though had it been included I'm sure we'd have managed to eat it! The whole ambience of the Peacock is country house hotel and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the garden side this will help minimise the traffic noise from the busy A6.

we were attending a wedding in rowsley this weekend and were booked into the peacock hotel and i can honestly say this was the worse value for money i have ever experienced. on entering the reception area it was like going back in time, the furniture was all old fashioned and miss matched and there was a very stale unpleasant aroma to the area. the reception staff were pleasant enough and after checking us in they showed us to our bedroom. we went down a short corridor into the bedroom the bathroom was pleasant enough and very modern if a little on the small side, the bedroom however was a different story. we stayed in room number 7 it was very small the furniture looked like it had come from a jumble sale, the pipe work for the room was all exposed around the room and just painted white and the carpet had a couple of large stains on it . there was no air conditioning in the room just a small fan. i understand that this is an old fashioned style hotel in a quaint village but was very bad value, we paid £320.00 for the one evening including breakfast and i consider it to be daylight robbery i will certainly not be visiting again.

From greetings to departure our visit was first rate. The limited number of rooms assures one of lovely personal touches. the meal in the evening was sublime. Service was absolutely impeccable & the food, was oh la la! Would go back anytime ~ & the surprise birthday card on departure was just the cherry on the top.!

Room Tip: Didn't see them all, but we had a comfortable room on the 2nd floor

We stayed for two nights for our wedding anniversary, as a treat to ourselves. Considering we paid over £300 for B&B for two people for two nights, the room was very small, too hot, and a bit noisy. The bed and fittings were of a high quality and well maintained. The garden is lovely, though spoiled by the extremely noisy main road passing close by. Although on the river, there is nowhere to sit or walk on the riverbank which was a disappointment. Charging extra for a cooked breakfast at these prices is just taking the piss.

I've reviewed the restaurant separately as it is superb. Eat, but don't stay!

We stayed in Summer on a day when the top outside temperature was 20 degrees centigrade. Our bedroom and the surrounding area of corridor was incredibly hot and never cooled down throughout the night. No air conditioning and only a small ineffective fan provided. For that reason I would avoid rooms overlooking the road which are all affected. This could be solved by either installing air conditioning or even a small portable air conditioner at the top of the main stairs. I would hate to be there on a warmer summer day! Because of this I gave only 2 stars for the room which in all other respects was good..
Having said that we were really there to enjoy the excellent food for dinner and it was a convenient place to stay after walking in the Dales. Food choice, quality and service were all very good and I would stay there again but choose a room overlooking the garden away from the hot area.

We stayed at The Peacock for 2 nights in early July 2014 having promised ourselves a treat there for the last few years and wanting to see the Derbyshire Dales , Chatsworth , Haddon Hall etc
Firstly on a positive note the food ( one night Bar Menu - but as good as the fine dining - and one night Fine Dining in the restaurant ) was quite outstanding and in our opinion Michelin Star quality ( you MUST try the Asssiete de Desserts, quite the best sweet course - five small courses of the sweets menu - we have ever had ) and the staff were great - pleasant helpful and always smiling
Secondly on a negative note the room we stayed in ( one of the superior rooms ) and bathroom were overpriced for what they were and not up to the standard we would expect for the price and as the room was at the front of the hotel which is right next to the A6 very noisy with road traffic from approx 5/6am to 6pm

Room Tip: insist on a quiet room ( if they have one )
