“Warm and Welcome”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 21, 2014

We stopped over one very windy rainy evening on our way to Keswick. The Black Swan had a fire on and a warm welcome. The food was very good and it was very busy but everyone could not do enough to give good service. Our room was a bit different - you had to go outside and it was like a little annex. I would like to stay in the main house next time. We stopped here again on a sunny afternoon and the beer garden is fab!!

Did not stay at the hotel, but had a meal in the pub and it was stunning! The beer on tap was full of flavour with a nice selection of ales and a very knowledgeable and helpful barman made the choice easy. Our meal was one of the best I have ever had in the UK, with a well stocked and unbelievably affordable wine cellar! A totally unexpected level of brilliance seeing as we only popped in while wondering down the road with the dog...oh yeah, they are dog friendly too! Great staff who could not do enough to make us comfortable! Cannot recommend this great place highly enough! QUALITY!

On our way to Newcastle me and my mum stopped here for lunch. I now wish I lived closer so I could come here more often! Intriguing decor that provided much conversation. We had an excellent soup and huge coffee! Lovely staff!

I haven't stayed here but do drink and eat here. The beer is superbly kept, the food is exceptional, the staff are very friendly and the atmosphere warm and relaxing. I have no doubt the rooms are also of the same high standard. Thoroughly recommended all round!

We've stayed in The Black Swan on a number of occasions and each has been simply excellent. The food, atmosphere, location - especially the stream side garden - is superb.
We're a middle aged couple used to our creature comforts and we get them in spades at the Swan. We also travel with a couple of hotel friendly dogs and again the Swan comes up trumps.
The hotel has two main eating areas - the bar area, delineated by the tartan carpet, and the restaurant. For dog lovers, the tartan carpet area is where dogs are allowed. It's plenty big enough to accomodate Crufts and you can have a drink or eat dinner or even breakfast - if you ask them to set you a table there for the latter. You'll find other dogs owners with their pooches ready to swap tales and chat - always a great ice breaker.
We've always stayed in room 11 - an annex room two steps from the bar entrance and handily located for night time or early morning walkies with your furry friend. Despite its nearness to the bar there is no noise to keep you awake at nights, though if you're like us, you'll want to stay and enjoy the hospitality until the last gasp.
Rooms 11 and 12 are in the annex. Room 11 is the bigger of the two with a Super King (6ft) bed or two singles, which ever you ask for. There's a lovely large ensuite shower room and loads of room for your bags and dog baskets. Also there's tea and coffee making kit, a small writing desk, comfy chair and sofa and a water bowl and Bonios for the furry ones.
Once you've dragged yourself away from the comfort of your room head to the bar. It's everything you want from a country pub/hotel. Uneven floors - though there's good disabled access - not a straight wall in sight, log fires, beams, deep set windows, horse brasses - well you get the picture.
The food is exceptional. Plenty of choice and mention must go the the pies. Here you get a proper pie, home made with pastry top and bottom, not one of those nasty, factory made could-be-anything-in-it bowl of "meat" with a too flaky then slimy pastry top right out of the freezer. Oh, and go to dinner hungry because the portions are for true trenchermen and should not be under-estimated.
Replete and well watered from the Swan's very well kept range of real ales or lagers or wines (including those by the glass) stagger your way back to your room for a very comfortable night's sleep. The beds are firm yet giving (like a good woman? Please, no brickbats - it's just the way I am) and the pillows soft yet supporting (...there I go again....).
When you wake and smell the fresh Ravenstonedale air you'll be ready for a breakfast of kings and the Swan won't disappoint. From juice to bread to porridge and cereal to full english, not to mention the random specials, it's all there and expertly and quickly cooked which shows they care as much about their guests in the morning (for which you've already paid) as they do in the evenings (when they're trying to get more of your money).
The staff are friendly, attentive, yet not intrusive, and a credit to the Swan's owners/managers.
One last word - the Swan also runs the local shop; newspapers, essential groceries etc which truly makes it the hub of the village. If more villages were lucky enough to have pubs like this then England would indeed be a green and pleasant land.

Room Tip: Can't speak for the rooms in the hotel itseld but the two annex rooms, only a step (literally) f...

My husband and I celebrated our anniversary here. We had discovered this charming place two years ago, when we stopped for a drink after walking in the Howgills. We were upgraded to a warm and comfortable room. The food, service, and the general atmosphere was wonderful. They deserve all the accolades they get.

There is nothing to dislike about the Black Swan. Made to feel very welcome and I particularly like the mix of pub and smart hotel. Excellent restaurant menu and a good pub atmosphere for afterwards. I will certainly visit again and I urge you to do so as well. One final thing - I feel that places like this are vital to the rural community - this one even runs the local shop!

Room Tip: Talk directly to the hotel - they are very helpful
