We were exploring Swaledale, open-mouthed at the beauty of it all. I knocked on a door proclaiming b and b in Gunnerside but there was no answer. I am very thankful that there was no one home as we moved on towards Muker and caught sight of Oxnop on the way. In fact, I turned around and we were able to book in for two nights.
WE felt that 84 pounds for the night - both of us - was a little steep, but the quality of the house made up for that. It is a fifteenth century farmhouse, oozing with history and atmosphere, very picturesque and comfortable. We held several interesting conversations with Mrs. Porter about the farm and the area and I felt very reluctant to leave this place. It seems to be in my DNA!
Beautifully kept farm in a truly wondrous area.

Thank you Annie and John for a very pleasant and comfortable stay as we visited your lovely home a farm break in one of the best locations(in the summer!) in the British Isles.
The rooms were lovely and breakfasts amazing.
It was great catching up with old times and we had a wonderful day at Reeth Show which is now on bank holiday Monday which makes a lot more sense.
We will be back soon.

Room Tip: Room 2 is huge and in a small wing.

An extremely comfortable stay, with a very nice lady - fantastic breakfast.

I came as a walker, with muddy boots having sunk in the peat around Nine Standards ... and tried desperately and only partly successfully to avoid shedding my dirt. It's not ideal for walkers as it's very nicely furnished - don't think there is a drying room - it wasn't offered.

Peaceful and a great place to stay. The room was huge and spotless. Annie is a lovely host and the lady serving breakfast very friendly. The room was also lovely and warm. Breakfast very good, an ideal bed and breakfast. Our only quibble was the queen size bed. It was two singles put together and the ridge along the join was best avoided as it was uncomfortable. A standard king size would be so much better. Location is perfect for walks and we enjoyed our stay. One of the guests told us they had returned over ten times, what more can I say?

Because the village of Richmond was crowded with tourists enjoying the Walking and Book Festival we decided we needed help booking a room. A very nice woman at the TI in Richmond asked if we minded staying out of town at a farmhouse. We were delighted to accept and so began our discovery of Farmhouse B&Bs of England.
When we arrived at Oxnop Farm, I had to get out of the car to shoo away the cattle that blocked the gate. The bull nearby glared at me passively and I later learned from owner Mrs. Annie Porter that she doesn’t trust that bull. John Porter works this farm near Muker in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales and Mrs. Porter is in her 31st year of running the B&B. The countryside is enchanting and, although almost impossible to believe, looks exactly as depicted in the TV series All Creatures Great and Small of the 70’s as most of the outdoor scenes were filmed in this area.
The charming stone farmhouse was built in 1685. Our room, up one flight, was perfect and included “face flannels” (wash cloths), well-appointed tea tray with Columbian instant coffee instead of Nescafé, fancy soaps, shampoo, conditioner, a wardrobe and towel heaters, a nice luxury.
After settling into our ensuite room Mrs. Porter suggested we might enjoy a short hike down to the Swale River just below the farmhouse so we took a walk down there. However we found it very dark and damp near the river so we decided to not hike over the slippery stile and into the gloomy forest. The sounds of the river soothed us and we enjoyed watching a small flock of pheasants scurry up the wooded hill. That night we were extremely comfortable and had a sound sleep in the quiet countryside.
Next morning a delicious full English breakfast was served by an employee of 3 years who told us her enchanting story of how she moved to the area. Upon leaving we noticed a stack of Farm Stay UK catalogs on the table. We took one and became forever hooked on Farm Stays.
£72 for two. September 2010.
