“Fantastic view”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 15, 2013

We stayed here for 2 nights - on a voucher deal. we upgraded to a valley view room and were not disappointed - a lovely view to the back of the hotel. we ate at the hotel and the food was very good. All staff were friendly and service was quick, even when a sunday morning waitress was off sick leaving just one for early breakfasts and reception. We were amazed how quiet the bar and restaurant seemed to be even though the hotel was full and there were a lot of people about... there are lots of tucked away areas which made you feel as if you were the only ones there - with personal service to match. We spent some time sitting on the terrace with a G&T and very enjoyable it was too. We slept well. The rooms were clean and quite spacious. All in all I would be more than happy to visit again... and most likely will do - such a beautiful part of the country

Room Tip: Valley view rooms are worth the extra... all rooms are quiet.

Like many others we stayed here on a 2 night voucher. Again because of the limits on the number of voucher holders that stay each week our voucher was extended beyond its use by date with no problem.

The hotel is right on the main road with a large car park, there are steps down to the hotel - I couldn't see an obvious ramp. I was initially concerned that it would be very noisy but it wasn't at all once you are inside.

The hotel is decorated in an 80's traditional pub style (no farrow and ball colours here). Check in was efficient although perhaps could have been slightly more friendly. Our room (for 2 adults and a child) was large with a double and single bed, it had a fully accessible shower and toilet but you would need to bring a raised toilet seat if you needed it), including shower seat (if you had a large wheel chair you might struggle to make the turn into the bathroom). There was a basic bottle of soap on the sink and on the window sill. Water pressure wasn't the best and the grout could do with smartening up (no extractor fan) but it was more than adequate.

The room was spotlessly clean we had tea and coffee, a hair dryer and TV, it smelt quite damp if the windows weren't open when you came back in. The WiFi was intensely annoying - whilst free , we were at the far end of the hotel and it kept dropping out every couple of minutes. We slept well and it was very quite.

We ate both breakfasts and evening meals here and they were superb and very fairly priced. The staff were delightful and the service quick and efficient. I think they are actually underselling their children's menu which sounds quite horrid but actually is all hand made and items were swapped as we requested (eg replacing chips with potatoes and adding vegetables to the orders).

We would be very happy to stay here again and to recommend to friends and family if you want a mid range short break type stay.

We stayed here last weekend on a voucher. The voucher expired at the end of April, but the hotel were kind enough to extend our visit into the start of June. We too paid an extra £10 a night for the valley view rooms, well worth it. Nice size, clean and very comfortable.
A really nice old style pub/restaurant. As our visit was a short one, we didn't eat in the restaurant, but it looked good. The wife had a pudding as a bar snack, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Sitting outside on a warm evening overlooking the lush valley with a cold pint was just lovely.
The staff were excellent and a real credit to the hotel
My only little gripe was that to leave the hotel, you had to drive round the back of he hotel and back up to he main road. This road was in a bit of a state, so good job I had my 4x4. Low slung sport cars may suffer.....
Will happily go back and stay here again

Room Tip: Pay the £10 supplement and get a room with a valley view

Just returned from the Pilgrim Hotel at Much Birch following a 2 night voucher break. We opted to pay £10 per night (per room) upgrade to suit our dates and also get a better view of the country side, well worth the extra money. Room was of sufficient size, clean and comfortable.
The hotel is ideally placed for several activities and sight seeing venues, we went to the Hay book festival as Hereford was shut due to it being bank holiday Monday!
Staff all excellent and very attentive and the food of a high quality even thought the daily specials remained the same for 3 days.
As seasoned travellers we always take toiletries with us but I was amazed that there were no basic shower gels, shampoos etc. in the rooms for guests as we normally expect this at this level of hotel, could be a problem if we were travelling through as there are no shops nearby.
Overall an excellent hotel, well worth a visit.

My husband and I stayed for one night at The Pilgrim Hotel. Our room at the rear of the building was fine with fabulous views and the staff were friendly and attentive. The food however was the real star of the show - very high quality and absolutely delicious! Worth a visit just for the restaurant.

I spent three nights at the Pilgrim Hotel and thoroughly enjoyed my time there. In the countryside but ideally placed to visit places like Hereford, Ross on Wye and Hay on Wye. Good walking on the doorstep too. Quite literally. The weather was changeable and quite cool but I found the winter weight duvets (which remain on the bed year-round) too hot and the only alternative available was to have blankets put inside the duvet cover. The hotel room was very quiet on the valley side but I think a room on the garden side would have been too close to the A 49 for comfort. For that reason, a premium is charged for rooms on the valley side. I only other complaint would be that, like far too many hotels, the rooms are not light proof with good fitting heavy curtains. The restaurant has a nice menu and breakfasts were well up to the Full English standard. There had been a run on the house wine which was not restocked until Thursday night (the day before I left). All in all, I would stay again.

We visited the Pilgrim hotel, Much Birch, south of Hereford, in May 2013. We were keen to visit that area and found The Pilgrim as a result of a Buy a Gift Voucher. It is an excellent medium sized hotel and very suitable for our purposes. There was no distinction because we were on a voucher visit and we would certainly visit again. The famous view of od the Wye at Symonds Yat is a few miles away and Hereford and Ross on Wye are not far along the road.
The food was good and there is a pleasant verandah overlooking the grounds.
We visited Tintern Abbey (eventually) when the Sat Nav stopped directing us to Bedford !

Room Tip: We were at the back of the hotel, overlooking the 4 acres of well cared for open grounds. But the h...
