Owner description: These internationally acclaimed floral display gardens started over 100 years ago and remain privately owned by the family. Jennie Butchart wanted to make her husband's depleted limestone quarry look better and the result is the Sunken Garden. Other gardens include the Rose Garden, the Japanese Garden and the Italian Garden. The gardens are meticulously maintained and provide a riot of colour for much of the year. During the summer, special lighting subtly illuminates the gardens, musical entertainment takes place on the Concert Lawn, and there are ten spectacular Saturday night Firework Shows. The Magic of Christmas season also has beautiful lighting and evening entertainment, and an outdoor skating rink. Spring offers hundreds of thousand flowering bulbs and Autumn is the time for dahlias, chrysanthemums and fall colours. The Gardens is open daily, year round.

“Truly Wonderful Botanical Gardens”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 10, 2013

A must visit for Victoria. Gardens are spectacular. Hard to believe that it was a rock quarry 150 years ago it has so much natural beauty. Go early before the bus tours show up so that it feels you have the place to yourself. Cafeteria was merely OK, had the pre made ham sandwich though the servers were nice. Gift shop was cheesy, big time. Takes about 3 hours to do the full walk but it's really worth it.

“Fabulous!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 9, 2013

We arrived first thing on a weekday morning and had at least 20 minutes to ourselves. The enitre park was great. We were wowed by the Dahlias and the gardener working there was willing to answer questions. The fountain was entracing and the sunken garden an amazing conversion from a quarry. Everything was clean, maintained and lunch in the restaurant was good.

“Always worth a visit !”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2013

One would think that October might not be the best time for going to a "garden" - I would like to confirm the contrary. I was very positively surprised about the quantum of different flowers still in blossem at this time of the year. We also liked the various different areas - the sunken garden or Japanese garden were just a beauty.

“Lovely gardens”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 7, 2013

What a beautiful place. We were so impressed that the family who created this took a blight they had made on the landscape (it was a dug-out quarry) and turned it into this gorgeous attraction. The sunken garden with its lake and fountain was spectacular. There are so many varieties of flowers and plants that you'll wear out the battery in your camera. There are multiple gardens: the sunken garden where the quarry was, a Rose garden, Japanese garden, and an Italian garden....and even a view of the inside passage. There is wheel chair access throughout the gardens. There is also an indoor carousel. We had a snack in their cafeteria. The soup was very good. Prices are average for a tourist attraction.

“Butchart Gardens: Fabulous and Amazing”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 7, 2013

On a recent trip to Victoria, every friend told us "Be SURE to go to Butchart Gardens!". We had planned to take the city bus, but ended up booking a combination entry ticket and coach transportation to the gardens, in front of the Empress Hotel. So easy. We had a perfect sunny day and stopped for lunch in the cafeteria style restaurant there. The gardens were beyond belief! When we came around the corner to see the Sunken Garden, it takes your breath away!! Wow! This must be how Paradise looks! What beauty from a former quarry, and what imagination and talent to produce it. Also loved the serene Japanese Gardens, and the formed hedges in the Mediterranean. Many fountains throughout which add to the beauty. These are the prettiest gardens we've ever seen on our travels.
The lovely original home is on the grounds and has afternoon tea. I'm sure it's a great experience that I would like to do the next time.
We spent about 3 hours here taking our time. The motor coach picked us up at the designated spot and took us back to the Inner Harbor. Seeing Butchart Gardens was very special, and not to be missed when you are in Victoria.
