Owner description: These internationally acclaimed floral display gardens started over 100 years ago and remain privately owned by the family. Jennie Butchart wanted to make her husband's depleted limestone quarry look better and the result is the Sunken Garden. Other gardens include the Rose Garden, the Japanese Garden and the Italian Garden. The gardens are meticulously maintained and provide a riot of colour for much of the year. During the summer, special lighting subtly illuminates the gardens, musical entertainment takes place on the Concert Lawn, and there are ten spectacular Saturday night Firework Shows. The Magic of Christmas season also has beautiful lighting and evening entertainment, and an outdoor skating rink. Spring offers hundreds of thousand flowering bulbs and Autumn is the time for dahlias, chrysanthemums and fall colours. The Gardens is open daily, year round.

“Superb Garden Exhibits”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 29, 2013

Butchard Gardens is a real treasure. Never before have I seen such perfection in gardening, landscaping and flower presentation. Every garden was perfectly presented with rich, beautiful flower and plant selections that always complemented each other.

The entrance fee is a little pricey but worth it as it must cost plenty to keep the varied gardens in such immaculate shape. I hope to come back again.

“Pretty Gardens”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 29, 2013

This is a nice place to spend a good weather day. There is plenty of plants to see including unique plants that you may never had seen before. There is gift shops that you can buy seeds to start your own garden when you get home. There is also plenty of rest rooms and food / snack shops. There is totem poles and a merry-go-round. My only disapointment was in the roses. It might not be the best time of the year for them (September). There are ramps so wheel chairs can be used here.

“A little underwhelming”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 29, 2013

Having heard rave reviews from people about this, we are going to go against the flow and say it was only average. No comparison at all with places such as the Eden project, which is also built in a disused quarry. Variety of plants was very limited, although it was all superbly presented. We ambled slowly around the site looking at everything and were surprised to find that it was all done inside 3 hours. The gift shop is very good. Maybe our expectations were too high, but it was a case of "was that it?" We will not be going again

“Just to see the Pioneering spirit of Canada”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 28, 2013

If you are in Vancouver Island this is a no miss. Not a cheap thrill, but to hammer home the will and determination of a nation this is it. To build a garden from nix, make it so lovely, easy to view, wonderful vistas to photograph, this is for you. The usual schtick, tea rooms etc.. but so so worth a look see.
Easy to get to. Shuttle buses, tours, public transport.
Well signed. You can take a day, a morning or an afternoon.
You will come home with ideas that will make your own garden a treat too.

“Great, even in the rain!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 28, 2013

The gardens are a must see on Vancouver island.
My visit was on a very wet day, but as a lover of flowers and plants it was most enjoyable.
