“Lovely suite on the ocean!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 20, 2011

The suites are quite large and contain a kitchen and sitting / TV area separate from the bedroom. Our suite was on the ground floor and opened, via sliding doors, onto the waterfront area. Chairs were available to enjoy the outdoors and the great view of the harbour and bay. Nice bathroom set up and of adequate size. Our suite had slightly odd closet configurations, but that was the only flaw. I would definitely stay there again. Also, it was within very easy walking distance to the village shops - including a fantastic bakery, cheese and candy shops. Lots of wonderful places to have a coffee in the morning. Staff were also very helpful and pleasant.

Room Tip: Rooms on the first floor open onto a waterfront patio. I believe the other floor have Juliet balcon...

The location is perfect, right at the end of Cowichan Bay's main street, with a stunning view of the harbour and bay. The large windows provided perfect entertainment: we often curled up with tea at the end of the day, watching the boats go by and seals swimming laps right below our window.

Our room was enormous, almost too big, with lots of empty space, but can't really complain about being able to spread out. The kitchen was modern, with newish appliances, and a few utensils for cooking, although it wasn't the most equipped hotel kitchen we've ever seen. We had to improvise a bit to cook some meals. The kitchen and bathroom were very clean, although the window railings were so dirty and covered in bird droppings, we never wanted to lean on them while looking outside. The bed was comfortable and we always slept well there.

We checked out the gym and pool. They were pretty good, and the restaurant upstairs has a lot of potential. There was a cute little space designed to be a wine bar near the restaurant that was seemingly deserted. Maybe they will open up something there in the future.

The hotel was undergoing renovations while we were there, so it looks to improve further.

The rooms here are quite large and it felt like an apartment on the beach. Great views of the ocean. Decor was a bit sparse. Loved the sliding doors in both rooms, making you feel like you're almost outside. Only downside really was the desk not being adequately staffed. Most times we went to the desk there was no one there. When there was they were stretched too thin to help everyone efficiently. But I will definately stay here again when I get back to Cowichan.

Clean if a bit dated. (There are signs posted up in the hotel about the renovations they are undergoing, modernizing the suites and so forth, something this property defnitely needs.) I believe all of the suites are one bedroom (ours had a King, and apparently they are all being updated to include Kings), and have generous sized living area for two people and a utility kitchen. There is a restaurant, small indoor pool and basic gym, as well as spa services available.

Pros:
Lovely, tranquil view of the marina from every suite (all face the water)
Decent enough gym (although the only elliptical was out of order)
Reasonable pricing

Cons:
No balconies (not that they can do anything about that now, but it's a big negative)
Mattress not the best quality
No dishwasher
Tiny table to dine at (cafe size)
No room service

We didn't try the restaurant on the premises, so can't comment on that. There is a cold beer and wine store attached to the hotel but it was closed for renovations (in July! Strange time of year to pick....).

This was fine for a night or maybe two, but is lacking in amenities for a longer stay. For example. the number of dishes, silverware, etc. in the kitchen is pretty bare bones, one tea towel, that kind of thing.

The front desk staff were pleasant although not necessarily well-informed. The check-in person told us that the wine /beer store was right next door ( it's actually attached to the hotel) but seemed to be unaware that it wasn't open for business.

Cowichan Bay is a lovely little spot with a couple of good restaurants, decent coffee and an excellent cheese shop. Well worth visiting for a weekend but I think we would try a B & B next time.

Went for one night. July 9/2011. Rooms were large, clean and comfortable. We all went to Cowichan Lake for the day so did not get to test the pool or spa but will probably return. The hotel is still being renovated but this was not an issue with us. I do hope the when you change the windows that you have figured out how to accommodate a/c or at least screens.
We ate at the restaurant for dinner and breakfast. Food, service, staff.....all top notch!!!!

You can't beat the view -- and since it's the only rated hotel in Cowichan Bay, you can't beat the hotel. Unfortunately, one wishes there was some competition to keep these folks making more of an effort.

Pros:

Awesome view
Great location
Spacious suites

Cons:

Ancient appliances (that sometimes don't work)
Reservations that aren't honored (We booked a king, we got a queen, and were told the hotel was full, so no changes could be made)
Expensive regular price ($278 per night) for what you get.

Dear fairmontfan,

I am very sorry that you did not enjoy all aspects of your stay. I just wanted to take a moment to let you know that we actually are in the process of making some really great improvements to the hotel. Our new room configuration for all of the suites will be a king bed in the bedroom and a new queen sofabed in the living room. By the end of July, we will have also completed 'refreshing' the suites with new windows, bedding, and drapes.

With regards to your rate it would have been $278 for the 2 nights you stayed, so it was only $139/night. If your records indicate differently please contact us immediately and we will rectify.

We would really like the opportunity to invite you back to the hotel, so you can in fact see our efforts and hopefully leave with a better lasting impression. If you travels do bring you back to Cowichan Bay, please do not hesitate to contact me directly so I can make your arrangements.

Kind Regards,

Lisa McCormick
