“Lovely retreat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 5, 2011

We spent three wonderful nights there...it is comfortable, clean and has everything you'll need for an escape...close enough to Mainland so you can go for a weekend.
The children enjoyed the great selection of movies and we enjoyed the beautifully arranged garden and all the nice details inside and outside this small but very welcoming cabin.
The best? Ralph and Rocky information about the best places to visit and Rocky's cakes...they are nice and warm without invading your privacy. Excellent place for couples and small families, we will considering this cabin when coming back to Galiano

We wanted a family getaway before high season started and the prices went through the roof. It was a challenge to find a nice, cozy 2 bedroom place for our 18 month old son and our large dog. Some welcomed dogs (with a long list of rules) and not children and others welcomed children and not dogs. We rented Arrow's Suite which is the bottom half of the Arrow's Run house. There was no one above us during our stay which was a good thing cause our kid is pretty loud. This place is wonderful! It is like home away from home - better actually! It was very clean, and well appointed with everything you need including a washer and dryer. Thank you Rocky and Ralph for taking care of a very weary family who was in need of some rest and relaxation from the city life. Arrow, their dog, was a perfect gentleman and oversaw his property like a benevolent king.

We had missed our ferry from Vancouver (seriously, don't be late for your reservation, they mean business) so we had to go through Victoria. Our hour long journey turned into 8 hrs. By the time we got there, we were exhausted and cranky but our gracious hosts made sure we were settled in quickly. We were pleasantly surprised with a wonderful bottle of BC wine chilled in the fridge

They were available to tell us about all the highlights and quiet coves of Galiano (since they designed the island map) and yet they gave us our privacy. to relax. They surprised us with delicious blackberry/blueberry pie and carrot cake! See the longer you stay, the more goodies you get! Rocky also gave our son the use of a little ATV that he delightedly rode every chance he got. We had some initial problems connecting with the internet (hubby still had to do some work) but Ralph sorted it out for us. Also there is satellite TV.

We were somewhat limited on what we could do on Galiano with an 18 month old's nap schedule, but we went for hikes twice a day and had a BBQ on the patio every evening. The Bluffs National Park also has a lovely circular hike and a nice beach area. Our dog delighted in visiting the rocky beaches, and going on hikes with us. She would even go visit R & R and their cats (uninvited of course,( but they didn't mind.

Galiano has two well stocked liquor/general stores (one at Sturdy's Ferry, the other at the crossroads before Montague Harbour) and Daystar organic grocery store. If you want meat products, you should probably bring them in yourself so you can get exactly what you want. Also there is a fantastic little food truck situated next to the liquor/general store at the crossroads which is open for lunch only. Great, healthy, delicious food. I highly recommend it. The diner near the ferry is also great - we enjoyed a wonderful breakfast there. We also went to the Hummingbird Pub, children are allowed in certain sections. The restaurants are a few dollars more expensive than the mainland, but that's to be expected on a small island.

If we returned to Galiano, we would definitely return with family and friends and take over the whole house!

Out stay at S+S was pretty much perfect. The cottage itself was lovely, comfortable, clean, cozy with every convenience for the family including books, magazines, puzzles, fresh flowers, and high quality linens. We were delightfully surprised and appreciative of the chilled wine and homemade dessert. We admired the eclectic collection of folk art and other creative works including much of the furniture. We noticed the well cared grounds around the cottage and the lush and bountiful flowers in hanging baskets and garden containers. And we welcomed the easy and informative company of Ralph and Rocky. We took their advice about places to check out and had a perfectly fabulous long weekend. We will be back-no question about it!

I have stayed on Galiano many other times and loved it. This time however our usual place was sold out. Bummer I thought what will we do? I reviewed every property on the island and was very interested in Sticks and Stones due to the wonderful reviews and lovely pictures. I emailed to ask availability during Labour Day long weekend and got a quick response from Ralph with more pictures and was told indeed they had availability. This was for my brother's wedding taking place that weekend so once I discussed it with the family we booked it right away. We were in what's known as Arrow's Run Suite. Now I didn't see much about Arrow's Run suite on the website but I did find out about the other two which are Arbutus Grove Cottage and Arrow's Run Cottage. Basically Arrow's Run suite is below the "Arrow's Run cottage". It's the suite underneath the cottage part which is really a nice house. Arbutus Grove Cottage is just across the property quite close to Ralph and Rocky's house. Arbutus Grove is a bed and breakfast and the Arrow's run cottage and suite is seperate and not a B&B. Do not let that put you off in any way. The suite and the cottage part are absolutely stunning. Everything is new and clean and beautiful. Rocky also came by on our first night to check in with us and to bring us some homemade carrot cake. Both Ralph and Rocky are so wonderful and friendly but are not intrusive. They also run the rental mopeds and boat rental on the island and if you stay with them you get a nice discount on that. They are full of local knowledge of the entire island and will tell you all sorts of places to go you would not ever know about otherwise. We loved staying there very much and would have loved to stay even longer. The only thing I would change is the checkout time. When you are on holiday and relaxing it would be nicer to have a later check out time. I know it's due to the cleaner coming to clean and all but it would be a nice option to maybe pay a little more for the chance to sleep in. That's not really a negative at all just a little suggestion to them. I would also suggest a hot tub up on the deck of Arrow's Run Cottage but other than that it's practically perfect. It's the best place by far on the island and the newest I saw. People who stayed elsewhere were envious when we described our wonderful place for the weekend. It's closer to the shops than other properties and has some beautiful trails nearby it. I can't say enough wonderful things about it! As a travel agent I am not easy to impress but this place exceeded all my expectations!! We'll be back for another visit!

Thank you for your glowing review. It is especially gratifying to know that it was written by an experienced Travel Agent. We appreciate that you took the time to write this review.
Providing a quality experience for our guests is utmost in our minds and being able to show 'island' guests the 'hidden' highlights of Galiano makes us feel good that we have done our best to make a guest visit a memorable one.
It is our policy to allow guests the opportunity to check out at later in the afternoon if we don't have incoming guests that wish to check in at 11 AM and our housekeeping staff is available for later in the PM.

PS: ARBUTUS GROVE COTTAGE was once a B&B but it is now only available as a free standing cottage.

Our stay began on a very wet, cold, dark night -- in contrast was the warmth of our host, Rocky, who had also thoughtfully lit the fire and warmed the cottage in anticipation of our arrival--she also brought over delicious slices of homebaked apple pie with ice cream. She was very informative about the island and her hiking suggestions were spot on. My only observation would be that the price quoted on the website is substantially lower than the actual price -- which is not to say that we were surprised or taken off guard when the bill arrived just that the new prices aren't posted yet. We loved the cottage -- the bed was comfy, the kitchen is great and the shower and bath were perfect -- what more could you ask for?

Thank you for taking the time to write a few words about your stay with us. November is often colder on the west coast but this year even more so. Power outages on Pender Island and a rough ferry ride to Galiano must have upped the excitement level for you both. We are pleased to read that you appreciated the roaring fire and the apple pie and ice cream....and the 'comfy' bed in which to snuggle down ...We hope you will consider returning to Sticks and Stones in the Spring/summer months to experience more island life with unique walks, hundreds of birds and animal and marine wildlife. Orca sightings are a regular occurrence during the summer months.

Ralph and Rocky are the perfect hosts and attentive to their customers' needs. Small personal touches, like providing guests with a cappuccino and carrot cake on a grey day, really perked everyone up and made the visit special - thank you!

I cannot say enough wonderful things about Ralph and Rocky! We stayed here for a week to celebrate our dog's 10th birthday. However, I had broken my elbow on the second day and was rushed to Victoria for a surgery. It was a difficult decision, but we decided that my husband and the kids stay at Galiano for rest of the week. In fact, I returned back to the cottage after the surgery. This was the smartest thing I did that summer, as we were able to relax in a quiet and beautiful environment with super considerate hosts! Rocky had greeted me back from the hospital with a cappuccino and some delicious baked goods! And she did not forget our firstborn, Chancey--she received some doggy biscuits from Rocky and Ralph as well!! When we were leaving, she let us extend our check out time to accommodate my injury. AND she had brought over a pillow for me to rest my arm for the trip home!! In addition, Rocky and Ralph went out of their way to return a toiletry bag we had left behind; They found us all the way at Bellhouse Park--this is AFTER we had checked out!! You will not meet more warm and considerate people like Rocky and Ralph anywhere!
