“Incredible but truth.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 22, 2012

This museum is different. You can see the salmon life, who are principal predators (bear , eagle, wolf, killer whales ... ) and you can visit the nursery, with a trip inside the museum. You can see the littles salmons, three month later and four and you can touch them !!! Great job to preserve the wild life and echo system. Absolutely to see.

“Surprisingly Interesting and Highly Recommended”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 8, 2011

My husband and I were visiting Port Hardy and saw the Salmon Stewardship Centre during a hike one evening. We decided to come back a few days later for a visit and had a really great time. I thought we would be there for all of 20 minutes. We ended up staying for an hour and a half (and could have stayed longer if we didn't have somewhere else we had to be that day). Who knew a hatchery could be so interesting!

The outdoor area of the centre consists of the actual hatchery where salmon are raised. The signage is very well done and explains how long the various types of salmon are kept (i.e. how long they mature at the hatchery), how often they eat, how they are released, etc. They also have a great display that shows how dramatically the male salmon physically change when they move from living in fresh water to salt water. I'm not into fishing and don't have any particular fascination with salmon - but this information was really interesting and gave me a new appreciation for the salmon life-cycle.

The indoors area had more for children (interesting for adults as well) with all kinds of hands-on displays, games, etc. Apparently it was only finished earlier this year (definitely looked brand new). And although not huge - it's extremely well done.

I think our favourite part of the visit to the Centre was talking to the staff - especially Erin (hope I remembered your name correctly!). Erin took time out of her day to show us some of the young salmon, tell us about the day to day operations of the hatchery, talk about their salmon preservation efforts and explain some of the challenges they face (like minks getting into the feed buckets). Her stories were both educational and funny.

Thanks to Erin and the rest of the team for a memorable visit! We will definitely drop by for another visit if we are ever in the area again.
