“Would not go there again”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed September 18, 2008

My wife and I spent one night there on August 04 2008, they charged us $140.00 the room was ok it had been recently renovated. However, they only supplied the minimum towels pillows etc. trying to get extra was like pulling teeth. The restaurant was absolutely disgusting and dirty we did not eat there. The upstairs bar was closed and it also looked dirty.

This is not a place I would recommend to anyone

My wife and I spent two nights here in late May 2008. The room was clean, and the furnishings were nice. We had a balcony overlooking the harbor. We could see one or more Bald Eagles anytime we stepped onto our balcony.

We had one lunch in the dining room which was very good. We would stay here again. I recommend the 2nd or 3rd floor rooms which have balconies. They do have an elevator.

We stayed at this hotel in 24 July 2007 as an overnight stop on the way back from the inside passage ferry (Prince Rupert) to Victoria.

For your information, I booked this hotel at the end of January 2007 and was told that this was the last room with 2 beds for the date that I wanted (my first choice was the quarterdeck inn, but this was fully booked already at this time).

When I rang the Quarterdeck Inn, they told me that although they were full, I could try around 60 days (or 30 days) before the date I was going to arrive in case there were any cancellations. However, I was stupid enough not to leave my contact details.

Anyway, our ferry was late and by the time we had caught the shuttle bus, we arrived at the hotel at around 11pm (we were the last ones to be dropped off). The night attendant was very nice - she let us leave one of our suitcases in their storage room (our room was on the second floor), so we didn't have to take it up and down from the room.

When we went to our room, we were pleasantly surprised. The room was very spacious and it looked as though the rooms had recently been painted. There was plenty of room to put our luggage. The bathroom was very nice as well and it was a comfortable room. The decor was very nice. We would rank it in our top 5 places to stay in terms of our trip. The bed wasn't too bad in terms of comfort.

In the morning, they have tea and coffee downstairs for free (make your own). However, we left very early the next morning to get to Victoria, so we didn't really get a chance to explore the hotel and it environs.

Our room was C$159.95 (for your information). Based on the room we had, we would stay there again.

The front desk staff were so welcoming I got the feeling that they made it their business to get to know all their guests. They fell over backwards to make sure everything was comfortable for us. The room we had was large and had all the basics, including wireless internet access. The bathroom was a bit odd - actually turning the shower on took about 15 minutes, and all the while we were concerned we were going to pull the taps out of the wall. Bathrooms certainly in need of updating. The restaurant was a bit hit and miss, but okay if you stick with the basics. Location wise it's on the outskirts of the town, but perfectly walkable from the town centre - about 10-15 mintutes. The views over the water were quite lovely. It's certainly not a top class hotel, and it was all perfectly reasonable for a short stay.

The accomodation is okay, comfortable, clean and good value for money. The views are brilliant, really good for bird watching as the hotel is on the estuary and there are good opportunities to see bald eagles right outside the window. It is essential that you have your own transport if you are staying here. The town is very quiet but the people are friendly.

  • Liked — Five bald eagles right in front of the balcony in the morning!
  • Disliked — Poor shower and slow boiling kettle

I admire the people who run hotels in Port Hardy and Prince Rupert. After the sinking of the Queen of the North in March its replacement vessel is not as fast, meaning a 19-hour trip. Hence the 6 am departure on the northbound ferry necessitated rising around 3 am for a shuttle bus at 4. But the staff at Glen Lyon took it in their stride.

I too was a bit wary of using the restaurant after a couple of negative reports on Trip Advisor, but it was fine. There's a restaurant downstairs and a bistro up, but I think the same kitchen is used to prepare the meals.

The hotel was clean and comfortable, and we had a good view over the water, both from our room and from our dinner table, and watched several bald eagles enjoying their day. We appreciated good thick curtains so that we could retire early (dusk is late here in late May) in preparation for our 3 am awakening.

Would definitely stay here again.
