I had the marvelous opportunity to stay at God's Pocket Resort through Sea Kayak Adventure's (SKA) kayak/yoga trip in July 2012. Yes, I died and went to heaven. When I opened my eyes, I was still on planet earth, sitting amidst a lovingly crafted resort with whales harumphing just outside my bedroom door. Owners, Bill and Annie, have put together a place like no other. Bill is engineer/builder extraordinaire creating comforts generated by wind power, heated floors, politically correct flush toilettes and a fire pit safely surrounded by cement in the wooden deck. The brightly colored lodge evokes a little piece of the Caribean but the towering cedars and soaring eagles leave no doubt you are in the bold Northwest. Annie adds to the mood and comfort with cozy flannel sheets, down comforters and the best mattress I have ever slept in. Still, she finds time to serve up family style gourmet meals. In the four days I was there, she served among other delicacies incredible grilled salmon, Thai shrimp, pizza with carmelized onions and feta, an aromatic ginger carrot soup, blueberry pancakes, a to-die-for bananas foster, and the list goes on. She makes her own crusts, breads, yogurt and granola. (When do these people sleep!?) But of course the real treat is being in the middle of nature, at the gateway to exploring worlds on and in the water, in a temperate rain forest and the air above it all. Marvel at the plants and animals you will meet. This is not a hotel you stop in at casually . My understanding is you need to be part of an outdoor expedition like an organized scuba diving or kayaking trip (or sometimes a lone kayaker or fishing boat passing through if there's room.) My trip was a perfect vacation of kayaking and yoga with the just right balance of adventure and safety (not an easy mix!). Excellent patient guides and masterful yoga instruction made me feel like I was in good hands. If you are lucky enough to stumble upon such a trip and see this lodge attached to it, it's worth every penny! God's Pocket is heaven on earth.
