“A lovely place to stay with friends”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 27, 2011

We booked 3 rooms at the Crown Inn on Friday 19th August for a night. It was my husband's 40th birthday and I had arranged two day tickets at nearby Alton Towers so wanted somewhere we could have a few beers, food and stay on the Friday. What a little gem the Crown Inn turned out to be. We were all made very welcome and really enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere of the bar and restaurant. Nothing was too much trouble for the friendly and attentive staff and the food was delicious, there was plenty of it and it was reasonably priced. We stayed in the Superior room and found it to be clean, comfortable and spacious. We slept really well and had a very hearty breakfast next morning which was included in the room price.

All members of our party said that we would certainly try and stay there again on our next visit. Thank you so much to all the staff at the hotel for making our stay so enjoyable.

Visited using a Groupon voucher, so this was particularly outstanding value for money, although I would say that the standard rate of £60 a night B&B would be good value too.

Marston Montgomery is a very small village (the Inn is the only commercial property located there) set in a lovely rural setting. However, it's only four miles from Uttoxeter and as another reviewer has said, is close to Alton Towers and lots of other places of interest.

Was in a standard double room, which judging from the photos, is smaller than some of the others, but then we were on a special deal, so that's fair enough. That said, it had an en suite with shower (brilliant shower too!) and everything we needed. The bed was reasonably comfortable and there was lots of wardrobe and drawer space.

Our coupon included dinner and breakfast and the food was very good – nice to visit an old traditional pub that cooks everything from scratch as opposed to the nasty pre-cooked and re-heated stuff that seems to prevail these days. The bar does have a lovely cosy atmosphere and the owner and staff were welcoming and friendly.

Couple of minor constructive criticisms which I hope the owner will take on board in a positive way: Don't know if the room hadn't been used for a while, but there was a fair amount of dust on the bedside cabinets, a few cobwebs hanging from the ceiling and the bathroom floor needed sweeping. Also, the tables and chairs in the dining room are looking a bit sad – an immediate improvement would be to use tablecloths but in the long term a can of spray paint would work wonders!

I know it's easy to be over critical of accommodation and I have to say that some of the reviews about various places I have read on Trip Advisor can be quite offensive. This is certainly not my intent. The Crown Inn is a truly lovely place to visit, but it does need a bit of TLC here and there which would make all the difference. Would I stay there again and recommend it to friends – most certainly.

It's nice to find real people working in a real pub and it has to be said that the owner and his staff really make the place what it is – long may they continue to provide this facility for visitors and villagers alike.

Last weekend my family and I hired a self catering cottage in Somersal Herbert. We wanted to find a local pub that would happily cater for all 20 of us. I found this place online. I rang and spoke to the landlord. What wonderful service! He went out of his way to accommodate us! He provided us with a private dining room, took our orders in advance and made us feel so welcome! He added a vegetarian option to the childrens menu, especially for us and really went out of his way to cater for the veggies in the group. The service was spot on and the food was excellent. Hand cut chips, fab steaks and homemade pies. The pub itself is in a lovely location, has polite staff and the bar is very well stocked with great organic lager, local ales and an admirable whiskey selection. 20 happy people left smiling :)

My husband and I stayed here for two nights and , in spite of other comments on here, have to say that we have no complaints. The hotel is in a small village which is about 8 miles from the centre of Ashbourne. Our room was small, but then we don't go on holiday to stay in the hotel bedroom, and the bathroom was fine. We were greeted by a very pleasant man who we assume is the owner. A slight problem is the fact that one can't check in till after 5 o'clock as the hotel closes in the afternoon , so an earlier check-in time would have been preferable but that is a minor point. We dined in the restaurant both nights and the food was excellent. Even though we were using a Groupon voucher we did not feel that our portions were any smaller than other diners . The restaurant obviously has an excellent reputation locally and on the Friday evening both that and the bar were buzzing.Yes, there was the delivery van at 6 a.m. but he didn't stay long! An excellent base for touring Derbyshire with good food and an extremely well stocked bar to return to.

This trip was through Groupon so a very good deal was had, however, I am not sure if there was a cleaner in that day and, had I been there longer would have complained. Bedding unironed, bathroom adequately clean and flies on the restaurant and bar windows - these had been there a long time! Shower was rather grubby but plenty of hot water. Wastebin dirty and should be replaced - but am 'nitpicking'

On a positive note, the staff were very friendly and the food very good - although would have been disappointed if paying the full rate as very small portion served. Desert delicious. Breakfast very tasty.

Would I go again - if I was passing for a drink and a walk around the beautiful village

Room Tip: Not given choice but some rooms are very small

But did not have a good start, arrived a 3:30pm when pub shut and took a while to rouse anyone, got a not very warm welcome almost like they were not expecting us - this turned out to be the landlord though didnt know at the time, Confusion then with room (not ready) as my booking said i had booked a superior room with kingsize bed but all beds were double. We would have not stayed if we'd known that! Finally got a better room (still double) but had to wait for it to be cleaned! From then on things got better and we loved our 2 night stay, the village is quiet save for a few tractors and a cockeral or two and we walked the country lanes with hardly a car passing us. Idyllic! Evening food was good and reasonably priced, beer too! Breakfast was excellent, nicely cooked and not too much.
After our first night we were presented with the bill even though we had handed in our booking printout on arrival clearly saying we were there for 2 nights so more confusion, we were begining to feel a bit like they didn't want us there! That sorted, we got on better terms with the landlord but he never appologised for all the mess save to say he had worked at top London hotels and was used to sorting out these problems!!!!! We thought it was more like his incomptence! It did put a dampner on the stay, but saying that we would go again - and know what to expect next time!!! Villagers all very friendly and loved to talk to us on our walkabouts and had the most lovely weather which helped! Would reccomend as good value for money, but bedroom decor a bit tired, curtains need to be lined! Downstairs nice

Room Tip: Room 1 at front of pub,

I should say from the start the we booked this as a special offer through groupon which included the room and meal so it's hard to rate on value as I don't know what the inn normally charges for a room. The room was average, pretty basic in terms of what is offered and the bed was fairly uncomfortable and seemed small but we are used to a king size at home. The shower room was fine, shower was good although when my wife tried to have shower at around 8am there was no hot water but after about 20 minutes we tried again and it was fine, not really an issue for us as we weren't in a hurry to leave but might be if you had somewhere to get to!
Our evening meal was pleasant enough although it was a little disappointing there were only 4 choices of main course. We had spicy prawns to start which were really nice and a rump steak for main which was fine but not worth the £14.95 that's charged for it. The cheescake for desert was fantastic. The bar is well stocked and has a great local organic lager called Freedom which is well worth trying and was £3.40 a pint. There were also real ales and good selection of wines and spirits. The bar has a few comfy sofas and chairs and was cosy and relaxing, just slightly odd that there are pictures of chickens everywhere!
The breakfast was very nice, fruit juice, cereal, toast and full english with delicious sausages. The guy that runs the place was pleasant and helpful too.
For what we paid for our offer it was good, not sure I would go back just because the rooms aren't brilliant but if I lived nearer I'd more than happy popping in for a pint.
