“Haven at the top of a hill on the edge of the High Atlas”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 27, 2013

In a world of its own, only an hour from Marrakesh, but off the beaten track and perched on the top of a hill, this is an excellent base for a few days' quiet after the hustle and bustle of Marrakesh. Food was good, though menu a little limited as it is sourced locally (including from the Kasbah's own gardens). The environment is superb - spacious, well furnished, clean and with very friendly and helpful staff. Would heartily recommend during the warm months, when it is possible to go out on treks, visit local villages, etc, but think it may become a little claustrophobic in the winter months.

Stunning location in the foothills of the High Atlas mountains overlooking the Ourika valley. This kasbah style hotel is very spacious and has a good pool. Our bedroom and bathroom were excellent - plenty of space and light. The hotel grounds are extensive with beautiful gardens providing many places to sit and relax and beyond these a working garden that provides food for the hotel. Our favourite spot was a bench at the very end of the vegetable garden that looks straight across the valley into the High Atlas.

The food at breakfast and dinner was fantastic and all the staff friendly and helpful.

We would recommend this place to anyone who wants somewhere to relax for a few days to enjoy great scenery and good food in a friendly environment.

It's also worth taking a short 20 - 30 minute walk down the track to one of the local villages.

The hotel sits on top of its own small hill with views back over the plain towards Marrakech and stunning views up the valley to the Atlas Mountains. On arrival we were immediately struck by the beauty of the setting and a perfect marriage of comfortable sofas, interesting antiques and fresh flowers. A first class breakfast was served on the terrace, no fixed times, simply available until everyone had eaten. Lunch (if needed) and evening meals were also very good and not too expensive, and all beautifully presented. Mint tea and homemade biscuits were a treat at 4pm.
The managers and staff provided an excellent service; helpful, friendly and attentive.
In addition there is a good swimming pool and delightful gardens, and camel rides or guided treks if you can drag yourself away from this little patch of heaven!

Set in the foothills of the Atlas Mountains this is the perfect place to unwind after the hustle bustle of Marrakech.

The Kasbah has extensive gardens where there is plenty of seating where you can relax in private and chill out amongst the various citrus trees or admiring the views of the Atlas Mountains
There is also a good sized pool with plenty of shade if you wish to get out of the hot midday sun.

The Kasbah is in a remote place so food is also available at reasonable cost, and good quality, probably as it is sourced either from their own very good veg garden or from the fertile valley just below the Kasbah.

The views from all around the Kasbah are outstanding due to its location in the valley.
Breakfast and Lunch are served on the patio by the excellent and attentive staff, a great start to the day.

Everything was set up for a perfect stay, maybe to perfect, but there was something missing, it took a while to figure this out.

Everything was quiet, this was the issue, whilst the Kasbah was full no guests spoke to each other, so unlike compact establishments where conversations start up due to guest close proximity this did not happen here due to the all space available the guests, this lead to a flat atmosphere. It would be a great gesture to offer a complimentary activity to encourage guests to mix, thinking hats on management?

Notwithstanding this the Kasbah is a superb place and where you can retreat to and chill out, we had great stay and thoroughly recommend it.

Kingsley Top Tip....take some pens and pads for the children in the local villages, desperately needed.

We stayed at the Kasbah Bab Ourika in the spring of 2013 with our two small children and two older parents. While the drive was a little longer than expected (plan on an hour beyond Marrakech if coming from Rabat), it was well worth it. The views are breathtaking, the landscaping beautiful and the garden (flowers, vegetables, and herbs) made me never want to leave. The only thing better than all of this was the breakfast.

The Kasbah Bab Ourika only has 19 rooms which means it has a very personal feel to the place. If you want to mix with other guests it is easy and friendly, or if you just want to curl up and read a book you can do that without interruptions. Situated up in the foothills of the Atlas Mountains, it has stunning views from all viewpoints. If you want a noisy, busy place with lots of night life this is NOT the place for you, but if you want peace, quiet, tranquillity, excellent food, excellent service and a bit of luxury pampering you could do no better than spend a few days here. Managed by Amanda (a delightful Kiwi) and her husband, the staff are mainly from the local villages are all well trained and organised. It's only an hour drive outside Marrakech so it's perfect to spend a few days in the city and then a few days up at Bab Ourika.
If I could change my working life to spend 3 weeks a month at work and one week here I would do it tomorrow. I just hope the hotel retains its charm and exclusivity and that they can find me a room whenever I get a chance to return!

Room Tip: We had their Deluxe Room (which is their standard room) and it was delightful, amazing view and own...

KBO is in a truly magical setting with wonderful views pretty much everywhere you choose to sit/lie down. Amanda and her team are really hospitable making it a truly relaxing and comfortable stay. The gardens are lovely and the veg garden is inspiring. As one of the guests said: it's probably the only infinity veg garden in the world. As well as relaxing, gentle walking, napping and reading, we enjoyed our daily visits to the two charming and well cared for donkeys.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Bab Ourika perches majestically on a hilltop at the apex of the Ourika Valley, guarding the gateway to the snow-capped Atlas Mountains – yet it is only 45 minutes from Marrakech’s International airport. With 360 degree panoramic views, this innovative new hotel receives warm sunlight all day, ending in spectacular sunsets. From its unique eyrie-like position it offers a birds eye view of the Atlas, of traditional Berber villages and of the lush river valley below. The Kasbah is one of the most eco-friendly hotels in Morocco; constructed principally from rammed earth, the traditional Berber building technique, it seems almost to have grown out of the rocks beneath. The thick walls provide such good insulation that air-conditioning is unnecessary. Solar panels provide hot water for the hotel and and the underfloor heating in the dining and bar area. Soon a biodigester will provide electricity and compost not only for the hotel but also for the village below. ... more   less
