“Good wintertime eating”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 16, 2013

We arrived in the dark on a foul, cold winter evening and went into a warm and inviting environment which prefaced a lovely meal and a good evening. The welcome we received was warm and genuine from a young lady (daughter of the owner?) who then looked after us splendidly throughout our meal.
The food was very good, attractively presented and HOT. If we were to have a complaint it would be that the huge servings were very daunting, and indeed I have never left so much food on my plate. The servings could be reduced by about 25 percent and I think nobody would complain about going hungry - at least we wouldn't feel guilty about wasting so much good food.
But, that is carping - we had a super evening.

“Great place for any occasion”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 1, 2013

Great meal, not too expensive, service good, quality of the food excellent. Liked the period features and the general ambience. However, not too sure about the tables suspended from the beams by chains, novel idea but doesn't make for easy eating as the table swings about a bit.

“First class gastro pub”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 27, 2012 via mobile

Super meal and service. Busy so a bit squashed but staff very attentive and professional. Vegetarian dishes are superb. Lots to choose from - possibly too much! Not cheap but very good quality all round.

“Fantastic food, atmospheric pub, perfect for Christmas!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 18, 2012

We came here for a family christmas lunch on a mid-December sunday. It was quite quiet with only one or two other parties there. The service was excellent both at the bar and with a very informative and friendly waitress. It has a cosy atmosphere, the decor is great, very old English pub with an interesting twist...we were seated at a table hanging from the ceiling on large chains next to a lovely open fire. Beside us a table was mounted upside down to make a chandelier! They had also certainly gone to town with the christmas decorations, it felt like a santa's grotto! We were 3 vegetarians, 1 vegan and 2 two meat eaters and all thoroughly enjoyed our dishes. We had a delicious vegetable wellington, a couple of tasty veggie 'bubble and squeak' dishes, a wild mushroom stroganoff, a spicy dhansak and a belly of pork. The food was hot, tasty and good size portions. Wish we'd had room for dessert. Wouldn't hesistate to come here again, looking forward to visit in the new year! Thoroughly recommended!

“Good pub lunches with atmosphere”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 15, 2012 via mobile

We've lunched here twice recently. I've also been a few times before, over the years.

Food has always been nicely done and plentiful.

The pub has atmosphere "in spades" and is an ideal place to take foreign visitors who want their idea of how English pubs look confirmed. Hopefully, the good food might also go some way to improving our reputation for cuisine...
