“Another lovely weekend at The Bay Horse”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 16, 2012

Have just spent another lovely weekend at The Bay Horse.Last time we stayed in April we were offered another 2 day stay for £70.00-on a bed and breakfast basis. We decided this was an offer we could'nt resist as this weekend co-incided with The Otterburn festival and the Rothbury music festival-perfect.On checking in we received another warm welcome. Our room-no 6-was clean, spacious and tastefully decorated-lovely.Breakfasts and evening meals were good-both in quality and service.Lovely staff and a warm friendly welcome make The Bay Horse an ideal place to stay when visiting this area of Northumberland.

Room Tip: Rooms 6 and 7 very spacious.

Visited the Bay Horse Inn on Saturday 16th June 2012. The Bay Horse is a traditional pub situated on the A68 main road. We were in a group of 12 people who booked out 6 of the 7 rooms.
The food served in the Bay Horse is 1st class made from local produce. I ordered the 'Scotch Beef' with Yorkshire Puddings and vegetable's which was cooked beautifully and tasted fantastic. The average cost of a main meal is £8-£10.
A pint of lager was priced at £3.15 with other spirits also reasonably priced. If you are staying overnight you are allowed to run a 'tab' at the bar based on your room number.
The bedrooms were traditional and clean however the en-suite bathrooms were on the small side however they were clean and functional.
On an evening the local villagers all socialise in the pub making it a lively friendly atmosphere. There is a jukebox, pool table and dart board for those inclined to make use of these activities.
Last orders was midnight and I had a good nights sleep in Room 1 situated to the rear of the pub. The majority of the rooms face onto the car park.
We paid £35 per room which included a tasty full English breakfast, an average of £10 per head for our evening meals and beer money on top of that. For an overnight stay it cost us an average of £50 per person which included the room, breakfast and evening meal and alcohol.
This pub is a lovely stop over for travelers or for a week-end break.
Will definitely be making a return visit here later in the year.

Room Tip: Room 1 situated to the rear of the pub above kitchen area. Nice and quiet. Room's 2 - 7 are sit...

We stayed at The Bay Horse, which was very easy to find as it is on the main road A68 between Hexham and Carlisle and is a traditional village pub with accomodation. On arrival we were taken up to our room and told the time of breakfast, which was ok for us but I think would be a bit early for some people hoping to have a lie in on a holiday break. We were also told that we get a welcome drink as part of our deal with a Groupon voucher, but when we went to the bar later the lady serving (the same one who showed us to the room) charged us for drinks and as she was on the phone we did not say anything.
We were in a room overlooking the car park and as it was warm had the window open but it was quite noisy with all the coming and goings of cars on gravel and although we did not hear a lot of noise from the bar I was awake by dogs barking which disturbed our little dog who was with us, one of the reasons we stayed was that the pub allowed dogs. the room itself was fine but the bathroom was a challenge as a moulded pod,so quite small and when you shower the water goes on to the floor where the toilet and sink are so could be a bit of a danger.
We had food at the pub and the menu was fine with the usual sort of things and a special board and they also did takeaway food as the village had no food outlets, in fact just a PO and general store which was closed while we were staying (sat afternoon/sunday). On the Sunday after a visit to Keilder water and Hexham we decided to have the Hog roast carvery which we were told finished at 6pm so at 5pm ordered and we were told that it had all been put away but could have it on a plate which we did and it was ok but nothing else was offered so a bit disappointing.
We had no mobile signal at the pub but this did depend on what network was used however the wi fi was free and did work fine.
The surrounding area and walks were beautiful and a lot of historic sites close by we would very much like to visit this area again.

Disappointed.

Average room. Ensure is like what you get in a ferry cabin. Quaint but impractical. Breakfast was average and service slow and disorganised.

Ruined for us by loud, thumping music coming up from the bar until 12:30 am and then loud chattering until 1.30 a.m. which seemed to be directly below our room (5). Made worse by the fact there was no chance of a lie-in because of the early, restrictive breakfast hour of 8-9 am.
It was incredibly loud to the point of being quite unbelievable. Incredibly rude and disrespectful to staying guests who have paid good money to stay there so we were quite shocked. We were debating whether to actually pack up and drive home when the music was blasting, it was so bad.

Location was beautiful so such a shame.

Of course, it depends what you are looking for. We have young and were away for a couple of peaceful nights without the kids for our anniversary with the chance of a much needed lie-in so for us it was a disaster.

My husband and I stayed here for 2 nights with a deal from Groupon. The room was OK, reasonable decor, clean and with clean white sheets. The towels were white and soft, but some were fraying. The bathroom was a very small pod, but it was clean and everything worked. We ate in the bar both nights and the food was very good. We enjoyed the breakfast. There was grapefruit, prunes, cereals and fruit juices. The cooked breakfast was cooked to order, the poached eggs were done just right, the bacon was nice thick slices and the sausages were good quality and had an excellent flavour. As well as the food being very good all the staff we met were excellent, helpful and friendly. We would stay here again and we will definitely go back for a meal, especially as they allow dogs.

We stayed at the Bay Horse over the weekend of the 27/28 April 2012 via a voucher from Groupon,we got the voucher for a Christmas gift so do not how much it cost but it would have been cheaper than the rate of £90 per night which is the advertised rate for this establishment, this in my opinion is over the odds for a country pub B and B,perhaps bourne out with the offer advertised on the wall of our room offering further visits for £35 per room per night, however on with the review.

We were allocated room 7 which i think is the only room with a full sized bathroom with shower and a nice corner unit bath, the room itself was a nice double with the usual ingridients. The rest of the Bay Horse is a welcoming country style pub decorated as you would expect.
We both had an evening meal on the Friday night and they could not be faulted on any account,.
the breakfast was very nice, with cereals/juice on self service and a cooked breakfast served very well by the friendly staff.

Now here is the drawback we experienced, rooms 6 and 7 are above the bar/pool table area of the pub downstairs and also the jukebox which makes trying to get to sleep before 11pm on a Friday and 12.30 am on Saturday almost impossible,i realise the pub customers have to be catered for but you can not expect to keep the jukebox on full volume with paying guests in the rooms directly above, surely after a certain time a lowering of the volume a touch wouldn`t go amiss?.

Overall i would say this is a good place to visit, with good, welcoming staff and if you can get there with a groupon or other discount all the better.

Room Tip: Room 7 has got the only full sized bathroom, however over bar area and the noisy jukebox.
