I had kayaked a bit in the past with friends but this was my first trip into Gwaii Haanas self-propelled. We were transported as a group with all our gear to Kunga Island, at the north end of Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve, National Marine Conservation Area Reserve and Haida Heritage Site. There, we launched our boats and paddled south down Darwin Channel to the Bischofs, then Hotsprings Island, Ramsay and across Juan Perez. We were so lucky with stunning weather and flat calm seas for the first half of the trip with humpbacks sighted daily. I totally recommend the end of May/ early June for whale freaks. We continued on to the north end of Burnaby narrows and although the weather turned, we had a blast. Good food (prepared on rotation by all members of the group) and great company. Guides were super knowledgable, friendly and capable.
