“An Excellent Introduction to "The Islands at the Edge of the World"”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 17, 2013

As others have suggested, we started out visit here and it provided an excellent introduction to Haida Gwaii and the culture of the Haida. The museum, with its artifacts, presentations of Haida song, canoes and carved poles was especially valuable in setting the stage for the week-long trip we took south through Gwaii Haanas park/heritage site -- eventually to Ninstints. Between the fresh spot prawns, the crab-eating black bears, the krill-feasting humpback whales, the enormous trees and a myriad of equally stunning encounters -- this was a peak experience. Among the top five of my life to date.

“A must visit if you go to Haida Gwaii.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 14, 2013

A great source of information and potential understanding regarding the natural history and the dominant culture that makes up Haida Gwaii. Listen to the Haida's history being told by knowledgeable story tellers, watch and hear legends being interpreted through dance and song, see the unique monumental art being made onsite by skilled carvers and artists. Enjoy the local foods prepared by accomplished chefs and learn the reasons behind the strong reliance and respect most islanders have for this irreplaceable and diverse part of the earth. The friendly staff will answer any questions you may have and help you with directions, time tables of events, etc.
There is no other experience on or off Haida Gwaii that will inform you as thoroughly as the Haida Heritage Center. Enjoy and be well.

“Outstanding Attraction”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 12, 2013

We have visited Haida Henritage Center three times already. Everytime there are new things that we learned. The facility is quite spacious with good cafeteria and gift shop. The museum is of highest quality in terms of Haida art. I can attest to this since I also collect Haida art. There is always a chance to meet with the artists at the carving shed. Some of them renown, and some of them just beginners. You may bump into the next Bill Reid, or Robert Davidson or Jay Simeon !!!

“A trip of a lifetime”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 12, 2013

A strong and vibrant community is reflected in this museum . The pride that the Haida take in their art and culture is awe inspiring . Their willingness to share their culture will draw you in and have you longing to return , long after you have left their shores.
The potlucks , the masks , the dances and songs, the Haida language, the button blankets, the silver and argelite carvings, the refreshing simplicity of the sea cuisine , the pristine landscape, the abundance of eagles , whales ,ravens and deer, salmon, halibut, the proud look upon the handsome and beautiful tanned faces of the locals on a tiny island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean will draw you in and take your breath away.

“Outstanding experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2012

We recently spent 10 days camping on Haida Gwaii and one of the highlights was the visit to the Heritage Centre near the ferry stop at Skidigate.

We spent most of the day there as there were activites and information sessions almost every hour. There were two young men giving the information session the day we were there and they deserve special mention. These two young fellows, one named Cohen was not yet finished high school were very skilled in presenting the information. It is clear that the Haida have instilled in their youth a pride in their heritage. The tour of the long boats was interesting and well presented. Cohen did a presentation on their musical instruments, their dances and then gave a demonstration of 4 of their songs. It was just outstanding. His grandmother was in the audience and a number of us remarked how she must be incredibly proud of him. Her response of course was that she was very proud of him.

Cohen then lead the session on the weaving which I was particularly interested in. The centre has an excellent display that shows the various methods, sources of materials and then the finished woven products.

It is a true heritage centre and I left feeling very uplifted by the experience. I am sure that the Haida youth will ensure an excellent future for their people.

Haida Gwaii was a truly wonderful place to visit.
