“Enjoy the location and overlook the rest.....”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 15, 2011

We arrived about an hour early and were told our room was not ready. The staff would not even tell us where our room would be, or offer us a place to leave our luggage in the meantime. There is no parking at the resort, but quite a distance away. When we were lugging our stuff from there on foot later, a resort staff golf cart and a car went by us without offering any help, although we were obviously older women struggling with the load.

The location is superb. Our room, over the restaurant, was large, clean and comfortable; and we had a lovely view. We did not eat at the restaurant, as we had been warned that the prices and quality of food did not match, and that service would be slow. There was a smell of well-used frying oil in the restaurant which would have put me off eating there anyway.

The problem with this "resort" is that most of the staff just doesn't seem to care. We returned to our room the second day at 4:30 pm to find it had not been made up. When we called, we did get fresh towels...

Lots of mosquitos the second night as well - I don't know if this is the norm for this area, but I suspect the stagnant green water in the moat around the spa might have been the source.

You are given the option to leave your car at Painter's Lodge and taking the boat over. We opted to take the ferry, so we would have a vehicle to visit other parts of Quadra Island. e.g Rebecca Spit. We were not interested in any of the excursions (fishing or boating) or renting scooters or bikes; nor the spa. All of these activities are offered and would be fun, if somewhat over-priced.

There were two members of staff who were friendly, but most of them seemed to be on "Island Time" (slow and inefficient and indifferent). Too bad, as that would have made all the difference in the world.

We came for a two-day getaway and painting workshop, we knew it would be somewhat rustic, and we did enjoy ourselves.

Thank you for taking the time to write about your recent experience here at April Point Resort and Spa. I am sorry that you had heard our Restaurant did not warrant a visit. We are very proud of our foods and are also extremely value price point conscious. Our belief with this is an island and a Resort, but pricing does not have reflect such. I am confident that you experienced that with the cost of our Live and Learn package and the room itself. It did bother me that our staff here, that we believe are the sincerest and personal, did not offer any assistance or discussion. I will definitely post your comments regarding your stay. I do hope that we see you again next season and you yourself discover that we do care about our guests and what they say to us.

The location of April Point lodge is amazing.... however the accomodations are basic, nothing fancy at all. We enjoyed the deck right outside our cabin and saw quite a bit of wild life just sitting there. Unfortunately these cabins have absolutely no sound proofing. We didn't mind hearing people get up early in the morning to go fishing as we were able to fall back asleep. On our last night at the lodge a couple with a small child moved into the room next door. This child cried all night and through to the morning. The walls are so thin you can easily hear what your neighbors conversations. So if you are unfortunate enough to also get a baby in the room next door.... don't expect to get any sleep, or sympathy from the lodges staff. We left feeling very glad to be leaving.... and even though the setting of this lodge is amazing we will not return. Had the staff been more sympathetic to our pain we may have left with a different view.

Thanks for your comments and I'm sorry that you didn't enjoy your stay. Your feedback about the noise is appreciated. Our resort features a wide variety of guest rooms with ovean views overlooking both sides of the point, some within close proximity to others, some farther a part. We're continually training our staff to provide a high level of customer service and your comments will be included in our training process so that situations like this will be resolved in the future.

This year we spent two nights and three days relaxing and fishing. It's wonderful to leave the car for the week-end and just 'hang out' in a totally stress free environment. I managed to catch a 23 pound Chinook (Spring) salmon on my birthday, wiht the wonderful guide we asked for that helped us both catch our limits of Sockeye last year. We sent it off to Nanaimo trouble free to be smoked into salmon candy, which my spouse takes for lunch to work all year :) I loved my usual treat of a pedicure at the spa while watching the boats and seals go by. Our favourite room is over-looking the marina, so we can watch guests come and go in the evenings. I even got a brand new pillow when I mentioned the one I had wasn't firm enough for me. Dinners and meals are always tasty and beautifully presented, again, with a sunset view in the evening. We'll be back again next summer for our little get-away!

April Point sits on Quadra Island and is a sister property to Painter's Lodge near Campbell River on Vancouver Island. Painter's Lodge has a long history of famous tyee fishing, luxury accommodations and gourmet food but I had never heard of April Point. April Point is accessible by boat from Painter's Lodge, or you can take your car to Quadra Island to explore further...I highly recommend the latter. April Point provides all the luxury of Painter's Lodge, but is in a quieter and I think more beautiful setting. We did a nature tour around Quadra and were treated to dophin, whale, sea lion and bear sightings...a great adventure!!

Room Tip: All room overlook the ocean and have great views...watch cruise ships go by at night...neat.

Thanks for your comments on April Point. Because Painter's Lodge has been around a lot longer than April Point, we find there are a lot of people who don't know about us. But, like you, when then find April Point, they enjoy its beauty and charm. We're glad you enjoyed your trip.

First the good news - wonderful view if you stay on the point over by the spa. Not so sure it would be as good in the other units over by the office. Ask for rooms over by the spa. Deer feeding all over the place - fun to watch out the window. Nice to have your own little deck in the side-by -side cottages. Not sure you would want one of the cottages if it is not your friends staying next door as they are not sound proof. Bed was very comfortable. No air conditioning and windows small so if it had been hot the room would have been very stuffy. Most of the staff were great.

The things that bugged me: The resort is a fishing resort and decorated that way, except for the spa). Don't expect high end rooms for your $208 a night - when they say cottage they mean it. Food is a problem - at 5 pm the restaurant menu turns into a fine dinning menu so if you want a burger or light dinner you can't get it. They have a free water taxi over to Painter Lodge Pub or you can drive over to the really great restaurant at Harriet Bay (if you don't want fine dinning and the prices attached). Small item but it was kind of was the tone of the place - they advertise Avita spa products in the room but once you use them they don't get replaced. Seemed kind of cheap. My husband said fishing was Ok but once one fish was in the boat the guide seemed satisfied and not a lot of effort went into catching another.

Room Tip: over by the spa

Thank you very much for your comments regarding your recent stay. I do wish to point out that yes, we do offer the free water taxi between both Painters Lodge and April Point. With this, there are a total of 5 differnet dining options for all guests. At Painters Lodge, the Legends Dining Room, more of a fine/casual dining atmosphere foods from $8-$30, Fire Side Lounge, casual lighter fare menu, foods from $8-$15 and the Tyee Pub, foods from $8-$15. Here at April Point, the Sushi Bar, rolls starting at $6 to $11 and the Dining Room you wrote of, $11-$27. Each dining option as I stated available and open to all. Yes, there are several options in the city or on the island iteself, however, there are not many hotels anywhere in the world that offer 5 dining options without leaving your property you are staying at.
We hope that this helps clarify your options for your next visit. We look forward to seeing you again.

We stayed in a 10 bedroom 'Lodge' style apartment from 11th to 13th July 2011. On arrival at Painter's Lodge, we were directed to the jetty where the boat shuttle took us across to April Point (5 minutes ride). We then checked in & located our accomodation. It was very spacious with a great view over the inlet. There was a great hot tub on the balcony overlooking the lake but on the down side, we all thought the decor/bathroom/kitchen fitments were very dated.
There was a dining table for 10 with four double beds (two en-suite). There was a comfortable sofa but we struggled to find where the 10th person would sleep!! As it was there were eight of us so we were fine.
The kitchen was well equipped (even if it was old fashioned) and there was a separate utility room with a shower as well as a washing machine and dryer. All towels were provided & the rooms were cleaned each day.
We took a whale watching trip which turned out to be a 7 & half hour trip. Absolutely fantastic. Do not miss it.
Our guide, JJ, was very knowledgeable & found us whales, eagles, dolphins, porpoise & a bear. The eagles were magnificent.
The next day six of our party went on a fishing trip whilst the two mums spent some time in the spa!! The fishing trip resulted in a 19lb Chinook salmon which was packed for us to take home.
U19's are not allowed in the bar & weren't really ready for the fine cuisine restaurant & so we ate very tasty bar meals at the Painter's Lodge. We also sampled the cocktails at April Point together with a selection of sushi & side dishes.
In all a very memorable stay.

This was our second trip to April Point, but hopefully not the last. It is so tranquil and relaxing - it feels like you're in another world. The water front views are worth the long trip to get there. It's kind of inconvenient to drag your luggage on to the launch from the main land. It!s just a short trip on the ferry from Campbell River to Quadra Island. It's easier to load & unload luggage and you HAVE to have a car to see the island. The wildlife zodiac boat tour will change your life. Bring your camera and dress warm. On the island, the Herriot Bay Inn has surprising nice food in a unique atmosphere. Take a walk along Rebecca Spit if you only see one thing on Quadra.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the newly refurbished rooms.

Thanks for the review. Guests are always welcome to travel to Quadra Island via BC Ferries in Campbell River as well as our free water shuttle that travels between April Point Resort & Spa and Painter's Lodge. I agree...the wildlife adventure tour is amazing. Hope to see you again.
