“Wonderful Pub and Entertainment”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 17, 2012

I have only enjoyed the Waring House Pub section, as the character and charm of this room is really something special. The meals are very good, and priced very well. Our service has always been excellent, particularly from the guys handling the bar. If you are a beer drinker, then there are NUMEROUS varieties of both local micro - breweries (Barley Days), to many imports to enjoy. Very reasonable pricing and kid friendly. The evening jazz trio playing when we were there were okay, although my daughter was quite critical saying their ensemble was "repetitive".

“Pricey and inconsistent quality”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 2, 2012

We had 2 bad experiences in a row with service and food. There is a lot of rave about the Waring House - but I hate to say - it does not meet the rave. The food can be very good - but again, we have had 2 negative experiences in a row. Sorry Waring House - not on my `to eat`list in Picton anymore.

“Room for Improvement”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 30, 2012

We’ve visited the Waring House several times and stayed there twice. We’ve enjoyed ourselves for the most part, but as others have noted, the standards of food and service are not consistent here. During some visits we’ve enjoyed excellent meals, while at other times the meals have been good, but the service has been amateurish. This time service was good, but the kitchen falls short of meeting the expectations suggested by the menu. This is all the more surprising, because the Waring House also houses a Cookery School.

Our most recent visit was a reservation for dinner. We were greeted warmly and shown to a window table in Amelia’s dining room. Our server was efficient and attentive, so no problems there. For starters we had the Apple/Cheddar soup which was tasty, but as another diner commented, this dish suggests a Fall menu (how about some Vichyssoise or a Gazpacho for summer?) and Curried Chicken Pancakes. The two small cakes with a layer of curry in between were tasty, but nothing special.

For our main courses we ordered Roulade of Stuffed Eggplant and Seafood Triple (which was fine). Three slices of eggplant filled with a green lentil/mushroom stuffing sounds more exotic if you list it as a Roulade, but it was really just three slices of eggplant rolled around a vegetarian filling. The filling was flavourful, but the eggplant was tough and bitter so we couldn’t finish it. Perhaps they need to practice this recipe a few times?

Desert was Maple Crème Brulee and the signature Coconut Pie. Both were well presented (you get an enormous slice of pie and a huge swirl of whipped cream) but the brulee was just a bit too thick to break easily, so it was a challenge to get through to the delicious crème underneath. Simple solution – use less sugar for the brulee topping.

A cappuccino and a decaffeinated organic tea respectively rounded off an adequate, but not outstanding dinner. One delightful aspect of this restaurant is the year-round activity of birds and small animals using the numerous feeders and birdbaths on the lawn outside the windows. A plus or minus (depending if you like the music), is the weekend entertainment in the pub next door.

ended our wine tour here. The service was wonderful, and the paring was great. Would love to come back again.

“Nice accomodations”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 26, 2012

We stayed at the Inn, new, large rooms, nicely appointed. We had breakfast at the Garden restaurant, pleasant view of the many bird houses and birds. Very relaxing weekend
