We visited the Merrill Inn for a long-weekend March 22/13 and had a wonderful time. The Inn is a character home built in 1870's and therefore has the expected accommodations. It exceeded our expectations. We stayed in a room with a sunken jacuzzi which was very relaxing. Previous reviews have mentioned that carrying a suitcase up to the 3rd floor appears to be a hassle however we did not have a problem. The furniture and the decor is meant to be inkeeping with the time era representative of the house.
What we liked: service was very pleasant; attentive but still maintained guests' privacy (unlike smaller B&Bs). The roooms are charming, clean and comfortable, good price and excellent food. The package at the Inn included a welcome wine and cheese, breakfast and dinner at their restaurant - which was all wonderful. The food, wine and cheese were are local and really highlighted the bounty of PEC. The restaurant (for dinner and breakfast) is not in the basement but the lower level of the house which opens into the backyard - it certainly would be beautiful in the summertime. The breakfast buffett was far more than a continental breakfast - it included all sorts of home-made baked goods - muffins, scones, breads, local jams and cheeses, fruit, pastries, etc, and a choice of 1 of 2 hot items (either scone/egg breakfast sandwich with homemade chutney, oatmeal, frittata, etc). Edward and Nell were both very accommodating with our requests and made our celebration a hit!!
There was nothing we didn't like about the Inn. Yes some reviews comment on the rooms being small but this is a heritage home with history and not an American hotel therefore the rooms are not as big....that's expected! The only thing that I would have enjoyed is to sip wine (which we bought during the day) in the foyer (however we read that liquour licenses do not allow this) - it would have been nice to munch on the local artisanal food we had bought while sipping PEC wine in the beautiful sitting areas.
